Hi there - apoligies for long message, but thought background info would be useful -

I'm invovled in some research right now that deals with creative audio augmentation in different environments. I'm experimenting with how fixed sound (i.e. mp3 playback from an IPod) may or may not interact with the external soundscape (i.e. city noises etc). For this work I'm interested in hearing both the IPod signal and the external soundscape. Naturally the volume balance level of these '2' signals will depend on a number of factors:

the physical space (activity of space)
the physical space in time (activity of space at a time)
volume level of IPod music
type of IPod music
listeners hearing
listeners activity
types of headphone in use

This last one - headphone - is what I'm concerned with right now.

The degree of filtering or noise-cancellation (if any at all) obviously differs according to the type of headphone (closed/open/bud etc) and the particular technology applied (noise-cancellation). And so with that in mind, the audible frequency range of the outside soundscape will differ according to each headphone product.

I'd like to find information about the standard IPod headphone (ear buds):

1. what frequency range (of the outside soundscape) is audible when the user has the headphones on [without any IPod music playing]
or,
2. what frequency range (of the outside soundscape) is filtered out when the user has the headphones on [without any IPod music playing]

Though in this case the IPod is not playing anything, I'd still expect a certain degree of filtering to take place. Seems obvious really.

Is there any literature out there with this frequency info documented?
Do the ipod headphones come with technical spec info?

Any ideas or feedback would be great
cheers
