iPhone problems - desperately need help

Hi - non techy newbie here in need of help.

Recently upgraded itunes to latest version, no end of problems but now have one I can't solve. iTunes won't recognise my iPhone. It does, however, recognise two 2nd gen nanos.

Windows sees it (as a camera) when I connect it, but itunes says it doesn't have the right software. Hence I can't update or change any music on it.

Have been in touch with Apple and all they can suggest is to reinstall itunes or restore the phone. I'm a little reluctant to restore the phone as itunes doesn't have a back up of it. so if I do this and it still won't recognise it I'm pretty well stuffed.

I've updated drivers to no effect.

I really am at a loss what to do, I'm not particularly techy minded. My pc is getting on a bit, don't know whether that is an issue. My employer kindly donated an IBM Lenovo R60 laptop, I've installed itunes on this with no problems, but too scared to try the iphone on here in case I lose all my music.

Can anyone help me? My contract for the phone is up in July so I need to get things sorted for then

You can still plug in the iPhone into the other laptop, just don't hit the sync library option, that way you can determine if the fault is in the iTunes or iPhone.

So, if I disable automatic syncing, and don't hit any other butttons to sync the phone, I should be ok?

Yeah, when you plug the iPhone into the other iTunes a window will pop up saying something like
"This iPhone is already synced to a different library, would you like to sync to this machine?" Or something and you can just say no.

thought I had another problem in that iphone seemed to have forgotten my wifi network but thats resolved itself.
