So Im not very pleased with the selection of ringtones on the iPhone, and was curious if there was a way to download more for free, without hacking or cheating in any way. It seems like there has to be some official way to do it that you don't have to pay for.
I'm not exactly interested in turning songs in my iTunes library into ringtones either. That would just ruin the songs for me I think. I just want to have a selection of interesting little tones, similar to the ones the iphone came with. Thanks.

There are a number of places on the web that you can download different types of sound clips and sound effects for free. Check out sites like www.soundsnap.com and www.soundxtras.com for some ideas.
Note that these aren't necessarily in an iPhone-compatible format, but it's easy enough to convert them yourself either manually or using a third-party ringtone creation application.
Converting an audio clip to a ringtone manually is pretty straightforward: Just convert it to AAC format (if it's not already), make sure it's 40 seconds or less, and then give it an M4R extension before importing it into iTunes and it should appear in the ringtones section.
Note also that if you're using a Mac and have GarageBand '08 or later installed you can also create ringtones directly fro GarageBand using an option in the "Share" menu. GarageBand has some included loops and sound effects that might make interesting ringtones as well.

Try the MacMost iPhone Ringtone podcast. (Search for it in iTunes). Subscribe to it and you'll have over 100 ringtones that are easily synced to your phone. I have more than a dozen of them myself.

phonezoo.com is also pretty good. You can upload your own MP3s and clip them, and so on.
