I'm sure I saw an app in a magazine someplace that replaced the standard SMS keyboard with one akin to a standard mobile (ABC DEF GHI) etc.
Does anyone know if there is such a thing.
why on god's green earth would anyone want to use that? I hate hate hate it when I have to use one.

There's possibly such an app for a jailbroken iPhone. Never seen any replacement keyboards in the app store.

You won't find replacement keyboard type apps on the App Store simply as this isn't something the SDK allows developers to do (write apps that work as background drivers or modify the iPhone OS in any way). The closest you would come would be an SMS replacement app that provides its own keyboard, rather than changing the keyboard in Apple's built-in SMS app.
For jailbroken iPhone's, however, this is certainly possible, although I'm not aware of any apps that do this off-hand.

Dvorak isn't QWERTY

Actually, I think he was commenting on the original title of the thread, which was "querty" instead of "qwerty" (it's since been corrected.

I personally find it a major inconvenience, yet I know a friend with a Nokia 5800, and she prefers using the triple-tap method rather than the QWERTY or mini-QWERTY. My other friend with a 5800 uses the mini-QWERTY.
On a somewhat related note, you can get pretty fast at the triple tap if you memorize it. She could probably beat me using it, typing the same message on hers as I do on my iPhone with the landscape keyboard or the normal one. And I'm no slouch on a keyboard.

Because triple tapping a key is faster then a single tap?
The fact that the iPhone doesn't have a physical keyboard makes it that much slower to get yourself set, although I haven't had any real problems.
Do you think Apple could allow such applications with the 3.0 software? (The different keyboard methods)

Apple could allow it, but I'm fairly certain they won't (more to the point, they could have allowed it at any time). The bottom line is that the new 3.0 SDK still won't permit background apps and is therefore very likely to permit system extensions either. Due to the nature of how official apps run in their own little "sandboxes" it would require a major design change for the SDK to permit this.
Bottom line is that if you want to install systems extensions on your iPhone, you're pretty much left in the realm of jailbreaking territory.

Well there's only 10 keys to click on for that one, the keys are bigger and easier to click, especially with a stylus, whereas for the iPhone you have to actually aim. Doesn't help that it's a software keyboard. Bottom line is, it depends on preference. Even though she can type faster than I can, I still prefer QWERTY keyboards, be it software or hardware. I've got the layout memorized and I don't want to do it for the triple-tap.

Am still waiting for the built-in laser-projected virtual keyboard.

I one up you, brain waves!
All this said though, I can't wait to see how creative people get with mini keyboards for the iPhone, wonder if anyone will do a flip case snap on or something.
