A few years back when I was in retail I got a fantastic deal on a pair of Shure E3c phones. I have to say, I remember being pretty impressed. I had enough bass and it seemed to have great mids and highs. My only real concern was that to me it seemed like I couldnt use them very long before my ears would hurt. Maybe a little *too* tinny?

Well, a year ago at work, someone stole them. Since them Ive gone back to using my Sennheiser headphones. At my new work (office), earphones are much more practical.

I have been reading several reviews, but I am still unsure about what to do. I am not looking to fork out more than $200... and maybe even more than $100 if possible. I have seen many of the brands recc here on Amazon for decent prices.

Most recently I was checking out the Sony EX-71. They are cheap, and seem to get some nice reviews. My issue is... that being in retail I learned that there were some things that Sony is just flat out overrated on... and in the past any ear/headphones I have had that were Sony's disappointed me.

What are your thoughts? Again, I would like something with decent tight bass but doesnt need to be "boomy." Crisp, accurate mids and highs would be nice, but nothing too tinny that will hurt my ears after 30minutes of playing. Thanks in advance.

Going to the EX-71 would be a downgrade from the e3c. Have you tried using other sleeves to get a better fit with them? If you find that it makes your ears sore try the foam sleeves and try a smaller size. They're soft enough that it shouldn't really cause any discomfort. I've owned like 2 pairs of the ex-71 and they break rather easily and the sound isn't that clear. I upgraded to the shure e4c and there was no turning back. It was a lot better and the quality was superb... that is until the rubber caps at the top of the unit broke which is when I upgraded to the se530. Shure is the way to go.

His Shures were stolen so no attempt to try new ear pieces now.
I also got a pair of Shures for 75% off for working for Circuit City and they've recently died in one ear piece, and I've moved to Ultimate Ears and I much prefer them over my Shures.
This is from an E3G to Super.Fi 5 Extended Bass though, so it could be just a major upgrade.
