View Full Version : I am the Harbinger of Headphone Cable Death

I never had this problem with any iPods before, but ever since getting my iPhone, I have gone through 4 headphones or headphone mic/button adaptors. The cable shorts out near the plug so that the sound cuts out on one side. The latest casualty is the Shure MPA-3C Music Phone Adapter, which I have only used for a month.

It might be faulty products, but it's probably me. How does everyone store their headphones? What's the best way to take care of headphones so that a short doesn't happen so quickly? (NOTE: I don't like in-ear headphones, so I get adaptors to be able to use the earphones I like best.)

Before this, I had third party headphones that lasted for years without issue. I have always wound up cables with the "devil horn" method to prevent tangling, but I wonder now if that's too tight a way to wrap the headphones.

Any advice would be appreciated before I'm responsible for more headphone death. :)

Thanks

Same here... but in my opinion skullcandy headphones are the best.

tight cable wrapping, however tempting is very tough on cables. Best to do a very loose wrap, without any tension on the plug or "split point"

If you do a gentle wrap, and same every time so you're not "folding back" on a stress point - thats about the best you can do. These lightweight cables can really take a beating ( or can't I should say ) and are usually the downfall of those not cut - crushed - driven over or gone swimming )

I've never had very good luck with headphones. Since I got my iPhone last July, I've gone through four pair (one was lost). I'm very careful with my things, but nothing I do seems to help with headphones.

To the OP: You should be able to get your adapter replaced under warranty. Shure is pretty good with their warranty coverage.
