Recently got hold of a beautiful 20G, version 2.1, windows formatted ipod, however through my own stupidity did not realise that they are not compatible with Windows ME. I therfore have extracted the updater.exe. file for the CD and the winamp 5 download with ipod plugin but though this seems to recognise the ipod as an additional hard drive (in my computer and in devices of winamp) it claims that the ipod is not connected.

I have made sure the drive letter is correct via the config button and still it will not recognise my ipod. It is connected via the ipod dock and a 6-pin firewire and so in theory i cannot see why it does not work. It is incredibly frustrating and I would really appreciate anyone offereing any advice if they have had similar problems using this system. Any ideas??

one final thing it says do not dissconnect while it is docked, and the HD spins continuously draining the battery fairly quickly - surely this implies that it is being recognised....?

Is it a syncing issue..?

ARGH!!!!! People READ! He can't use iTunes. He's on WinME.

Short of upgrading, your alternatives are Xplay, Ephpod or Media Center 10.

Not sure I'd use WinAmp as it's so new to the iPod worlds.

What happens when you run the Updater program? Does it say not connected?

I can't help too much with the WinME problems, but I have also JUST received a 20GB iPod, go the USB cable for it to connect to my PC, and can confirm that the iPod HDD will spin continuously when plugged in with the USB.
Whether this is a problem with Apple's USB implementation or the Firmware, I can't say. I hope they fix it though - it's death for the batteries! If anyone can confirm this, even anecdotely, please do.

Regarding the winamp plugin, I hve installed it and it seems to work fine so far. It took a little fighting at the beginning, but it seems to be working now. Since I am refusing to install iTunes on my PC, I have decided to let ephPod manage the playlists for the iPod, and will use Winamp to manage the music on my PC as well as drag music on and off the iPod. It's not a perfect one-click-synch sysytem, but it works reasonably well. Mind you, I've only had it for 3 days, so time will tell.

Good luck - keep posting.
