I bought my bf an ipod withthe intention of then getting a firewire or usb2 card for his pc. But he's been told it's possible to use normal usb but it's slow. He had already thought himself that he could use a usb/usb2 converter and run it from usb. Download speed isn't really a problem and he won't be uploading /downloading often other than at first as we have th ipod to get all music into one place and not need tons of cds and tapes etc.

first of all wish i had a gf like you who wud give me an ipod as a gift :)
2nd....what is ur question ?
u got it right....if its a 3rd GEN ipod ...with Four circle touch buttons on top of touch wheel then it might have a 'dock'-'usb'-'firewire' cable if soo you can use that...
if its not a 3rd gen...the 4 buttons are located on sides of the touch wheel/scroll wheel then it is not possible to use USB and you will hv to use firewire...
The speed with USB 1.1 will be very slow....ALSO if you are using it with USB 1.1 then you should connect it to the power supply at the same time ...'firewire' part in the ac adapter...otherwise the battery will drain..
hope this helps if 'no' then give a little more detail about ur problem/query/question ...

Thankyou. It's a 3rd gen :)
It came with a dock that has a line out socket and the ipod socket in the back and one lead that connects the ipod to the plug to be charged that has the ipod plug and a usb type plug on the other end, it looks lile a usb plug but has a rounded end. I've never actually seen a usb2 plug so not sure if that's what it is.
So what I need is a lead to from the dock either with a usb 2 plug and then a converter to usb 1 or just a usb 1 plug on the end? But the dock only has one of the long ipod plugs so I can't then connect it to the power supply as well, so do I need a different dock?

Having had a look around I'm starting to wonder if it'd be cheaper to buy a firewire card anyway. I can get one for about ?30 and easily fit it myself

Aye, a generic firewire card won't run more than 10-15 pounds, so why would you buy the usb cable?

So you don't have to buy any extra cables as long as you have usb 2.2

Sorry, didn't read it properly. As far as I know you need to buy the usb2 cable as the ipod only comes with a firewire cable.

If you use Firewire on your Windows iPod you're good to go. You don't need to buy anything else - what comes with your iPod should be enough.
If you need to use USB 2 (because you have a laptop or no Firewire on your PC) then you will need to buy the USB adapter cable and the A/C power adapter (if your iPod didn't already come with one).

Mabey the HP-Pod will come with a USB 2 cable, this would be great for pc users without the Firewire card.

You don't *need* a USB2 cradle. You use the cradle that's already available and use *that* with the USB2 cable instead of the FireWire cradle... Easy! :D
