How many of you use an external speaker for your iPod?

WHat kind and brand/model is it.

In terms of iPod accessories, I have noticed many focus on earphones / headphones , but when you wanna just hear your music out loud and not be isolated... how do you do it, in places like work, etc.

Sometimes you need to share the music.

Discuss.

JBL - I think its Radial Micro, discontinued but just bought 2 at Sears on closeout at $30 - a steal, down from $120- It sounds much better than I'd expect for something so small. AC power only, but I guess I could get a car adapter. The tiny credit card remote sucks

It all depends on where I'm at, I have a Logitec speaker dock in the garage, a Tivoli Audio Model One radio in the kitchen (only one speaker but great sound), Tivoli iSongBook in the bedroom (great radio and sound, terrible alarm clock) and a car adapter from MP3YourCar to plug directly into my factory head unit, just to name a few.

I've got a few:

Tivoli Model Ones - one at work and one in my bathroom. Great sound.

Tivoli iSongbook - my portable device (battery powered). Great sound. My favorite small audio device of all time.

Bose Wave Radio - Pretty old (10 years) and used as an alarm clock in the bedroom. Doesn't sound nearly as good as the Tivoli Model One or iSongbook, but good alarm.

I need something heavy duty (for outside use) that runs on batteries or is somehow rechargable.

Any ideas?

Small, rugged, rechargeable for about 4-5 hours use, audiophile grade portable speaker.

Con: expensive, but definitely worth it.

At my desk, a pair of sweet sounding, long discontinued Monsoon MM-1000 planar speakers do the job nicely. Got 'em new for cheap years ago and they're still sounding great today. For portable use, a Tivoli SongBook and a pair of Chill Pills from Small Dog Electronics. The Chill Pills are tiny, rechargeable and sound pretty decent for what they are.

Portable - rechargeable - reasonable size for its sound - Soundcast - sorry I didn't think of this earlier - I've heard it and was blown away. It ain't cheap, but it is really really nice! It has a dock that you'd use indoors and the speaker after charging can go outdoors, at considerable wireless range

I can make one suggestion. Stay away from the Altec Lansing InMotion iM11BLK. Despite getting a decent review here... it will NOT charge the itouch and I have had a terrible experience with it.

1) At low volumes, I pick up interference and it has a low whining noise (like alternator whine in a car) no matter where it is placed. Switched it out for a new one and had the same issue. Tried a different ipod (video) and it still occurs.

2) As I said, they advertise it to work with the itouch but it does NOT charge the itouch.

I just picked up the Harman/Kardon Play + Go speaker system to use with my iPods (two 4G iPods and a 2G iPod Touch) and have been very impressed with the sound quality. It's pricey, on par with the Bose SoundDock system. It works fine with all my iPods, and charges them when it's plugged in. The remote took a bit of getting used to. It takes 8 "D" batteries and says it provides 16-hours of playback at "normal" volume.

It has a fantastic, full sound with lots of bass and no distortion at full volume. At top volume, you will be disturbing your neighbours. A lot of the portables I looked at sounded too "tinny" and lacked bass. Hearing this one blew me away and I was sold.

For $3.76 (yes, $3.76) you can get the Sound Pod from monoprice.com:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10823&cs_id=1082301&p_id=2399&seq=1&format=2

A buddy of mine has this and says it's OK. Great for travelling... and if you lose it... what's $3.76?

I have the Tivoli iSongbook. It's small, sounds great, gives you the versatility of listening to radio, the speakers separate, has a small footprint, and gives you the option of going portable (via 6 AA batteries, but lets you recharge through the unit).

A steal at $49.99 for American Sears customers!

That is an outstanding price considering it's $399.99 USD from Tivoli's own web site:

Wow.
