Has anyone listened to the set of books? I have started reading the first one, the gunslinger and it is good so far. Some people have called this series one of the best and even good enough to compete with the Lord of the Rings series. What does everyone think? the reviews on audible.com are pretty good.

I have the complete set from Audible, and I loved every single one. I have never listened to and audio version of The Lord of the Rings, (books, and movies are great), but the audio Gunslinger is great. Would greatly recommend every single one, enjoy.

Never listened to the audio book versions, but have all the books in hardback and have read each one. Currently I am waiting with baited breath for book six to come out since the ending to 5 was a great cliffhanger. Definilty worth picking up. A+
I listened to all 4 back to back and it was a sad, sad day when I finished #4. They are EXCELLENT books! I really enjoyed the reader of book #1 and #4 10000 times more than the reader of books #2 and #3. However I know that he was in an accident and is lucky to be alive, so it is hard to anything negative about him. He read too slow for me, b...r...e...a...t...h...i...n...g........o...u...t ......e..v..e..r..y....l...a...s...t...w..o...r... d.... ugh. Thought I would jump out a window.
This guy - Frank Mueller is his name...also read Left Behind and sounds exactlly the same. So don't think he's doing anything special for these books.
But once you get past #2 and #3 (which I probably would have like more had it not been for poor narration) you will LOVE #4. Stick with what works and King goes back to some great stuff he introduced in book #1.
I just stumbled upon the Tales from the Otori trilogy by Lian Hearn. The first book is Accross the Nightingale Floor and it was really, really good. I used to live in Japan so they brought me back to that place. I had some minor issues with BAD pronunciation of Japanese names, but got over it in time.
Being that Kings book #4 is very, very similar to 7 Samurai you may like the Hearn books as well.
Enjoy!
