Delete them from your iTunes?

The option is there solely so that if you are on the go and want to purchase an app or song from the store but don't have room, you can make room. Apple didn't want to ever see you unable to spend money at the iTunes store. The option is not there for managing your content, that is still meant to be done from iTunes.

Anti-Apple agendas aside, it's also there so you can download free podcasts/apps/music while you are on the go.
But yes it's a shame it doesn't flag on iTunes that you have deleted it, like the apps do ... sometimes :)

People, whether it's really a good idea or not, have been looking for an on-the-go delete function since about 15 minutes after the first iPod was opened back in 2001. It's not coincidence that it shows up, crippled, for the first time on the first models of iPods that allow revenue to be generated on-the-go. That it can also be used to free up room for free stuff is a side-effect.

I noticed that also. I dont think this was the case with the older software updates. Its one of the more recent updates that has made it that way. I noticed it after 2.0 or 2.2. Before those you could delete it and it wouldnt re sync them when you connect to iTunes.

I did alittle research and this is what i found off apple com/itune

"Prevent iPod from automatically updating when you connect it to your computer Command-Option as you connect the iPod to your computer (hold the keys down until the iPod appears in the iTunes Source list)"

so holding [CTRL]+[ALT] as you connect the iPod to the computer. Hold down the keys until the iPod appears in the iTunes window. This will prevent the iPod from updating and removing any of those files. Once the iPod is connected and has appeared in the iTunes window, you can release the keys. :D hope it helped
