I posted a similar thread on the Nano side, but it seemed appropriate to post here as well.
I'm looking at the Nano video vs the Touch for my next iPod investment. I teach Ballroom dance for a living and use iPods for both classes and nightclub/special events. We want to use the flash driven iPods for their speed and stability (can't have an iPod locking up in the middle of a song). But, which iPod? The Nano does everything we need and an 8gb late model can be had for $99 through Apple's refurbished department (I don't mind refurbs). A newer model Nano can be had for between $129 and $169 depending upon whether it's 8 or 16gb. Now, Touches start more in the $199 department and go up from there.
Here's the thing... I like the size, features, and interface of the Touch. But, will I take advantage of those features enough to justify nearly twice the cost? Not sure.
Is there something I'm missing?
Thanks!

I sum it up like this..
for music = nano
for video/internet/apps = touch
the problem with the iPod touch as it relates to playing music is you'll have to find yourself pulling it out of your pocket every time you want to change songs..which is unfortunately a pain.
Obviously this won't be a problem with video/apps or internet as you have to look at the device anyway.
Unless you are interested in watching video, playing with apps/games and browsing the internet via WIFI then I see no reason going with the more expensive iPod Touch. 8GB is a little on the lean side for a device with so many features.

I didn't realize how much I would use the Touch until I got one. If you go with the Touch you will constantly find new uses for it. It won't let you down.

Music is the LAST thing I use my Touch for. In fact for music while mowing the grass I will use my Nano.

I don't think there is anything that you are missing. You should get an iPod touch if you are going to take advantage of those extra features. Otherwise an iPod nano would serve you better. LynchMOB doesn't even use their iPod touch for playing music. I find this to be a little odd given that the iPod touch is in fact an iPod but they have an iPod nano for this (two iPods). So, if you are going to purchase just one model, I would go with the iPod nano simply because it doesn't sound like you are going to use those extra features. I would also purchase a 16GB iPod nano. You might be fine with 8GB now but you never know when you will need the extra storage capacity.
On a side note, I think you have some misconceptions about solid state (ie flash) memory. There are no moving parts so it is more sturdy but it is actually slower than a hard drive iPod. Flash memory is quicker when syncing 1-3 songs but a hard drive will provide faster speeds when syncing an entire album. Just thought I would inform you on that.
I still recommend a 4G 16GB iPod nano though.

kornchild, I have used the Touch for music in the car, just not a lot. For mowing it is much easier to use the Nano, smaller, skip songs without taking out of my pocket. And we actually have 9 iPods in various sizes, shapes and versions in our house... and they all still work. So I guess you could say we have an iPod for all occasions.
