Ipod Touch and VPN

I am going to Italy next month and would like to use my Ipod touch to check e-mail, bank accounts, etc. via Safari at public hotspots. Has anyone used one of the commericially available VPN services (e.g., HotSPot VPN, StrongVPN) or any other tool to protect user names and passwords when using public hotspots?

I use Hotspotshield VPN. Works well
