My 5G iPod just died and I am going to get a Touch. My question is whether I need to wait for 3.0 to come out or can I buy it today and just upgrade (don't mind the $10 or so fee)? I am afraid that, for some odd reason, I might have trouble with getting the new software.

You shouldn't have trouble upgrading to the new software (once it is released for the iPod touch). You would have to pay for the upgrade though and I don't know how long it is going to take for Apple to come out with iPod touch models integrated with OS 3.0.

Why do you say such things when you can not know for sure?
The new hardware maybe required to run V3.0 and what you are saying maybe wrong.

an also the same way the gps doesn't work for the iphone 2g unless you pay an addition fee even though if you buy the 3g it comes automatically.

Why do you say such things when you didn't understand what I said? Did I ever say "it is a fact that OS 3.0 is coming out for the iPod touch and you won't have any trouble upgrading"? No, I didn't. I said "you shouldn't have any trouble." Besides, OS 3.0 is coming out for the 3G iPhone which, minor differences aside, is the same hardware as the 2G iPod touch. People made this argument back when OS 2.0 was released with the 1G iPod touch models being the current iPod touch.

You are right, OS 3.0 might require newer hardware (highly doubtful) but I never said anything concrete.
