I'm trying to help my daughter sync her iTouch; when she gives it a try, she gets this message:

This iPod cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the itmes in the iTunes library (7.43 GB required, 6.89 GB available).

She had tried to delete songs from her library; that does solves her problem. Does anyone have a suggestion or, better yet, a solution?

Oof -- there are at least two other, less "destructive", ways to do this. The first method is to "uncheck" tracks that you don't want going to the iPod. In a music listing (or video listing), click the wee boxes in the leftmost display column to check/uncheck them -- unchecked tracks won't be symced to the iPod.*

Another method is to use smart playlists to limit the amount of content being synced to the iPod. (The "Limit to" dropdown menu in smart playlist dialog lets you set limits in minutes, hours, megabytes, gigbytes, or number of tracks.) There's lots of tricks using smart playlists; let Google be your friend, or visit smartplaylists.com (http://smartplaylists.com), or read this pdf (http://filebox.vt.edu/users/channum/files/smartlist_management_v5.1.pdf) from CodeMonkey....

* potential lie -- the iPod needs to be configured to reject unchecked tracks. The iPod Touch p'bly already has these settings, but here's how to comfirm: connect the iPod Touch to iTunes; click on the iPod's icon (in the blue column at left of iTunes window) to select it; th iPod's Sync Settings window appears. In the Summary pane, check the box for "Sync only checked songs and videos" and click the Apply button.
