Hi, I got given an Ipod touch. Managed to populate okay with files already on my lap top and spend days burning my CD collection and have bought some stuff from Itunes... although left my lap top in a taxi... and have lost all my music apart from what is on my ipod.. how do I get the content of my Ipod on to my new Laptop..?? is it possible...?? My new lappy has no itunes on it yet... where do I start.. I found these instructions on the forum... is it a good place to start..??

How to copy songs from iPod to computer w/o the need of software
See this thread for the step-by-step instructions.

Windows version:

-Go to my computer> Tools>
-Folder option> view>
-Check the box next to 'show hidden files & folders'.
-Then connect the iPod
-When the iPod shows up in 'My Computer'
-Click open the hard drive then
-Remove the music folder to your desktop or a music folder.
-Then open the music folders and you will see folders titled 'F00', F01, et cetera. The music files are inside.
-Remove the files by opening the folder, highlight all songs (edit>select all) and drag-n-drop the files into the iTunes library. The files are coded and will look like (QTRX, TRVB - they will have a 4 letter code) but the actual titles will appear correctly when the files are added to the iTunes library.

Thanks,

Nick

You won't be able to go to "My Computer" and look at the files on the iPod touch. The older iPods (and other modern iPods) use this storing method but the use does not have access to the iPod's internal memory. There are many applications that can copy content off of an iPod touch though. iFone gave you a recommendation. You can also look here in the FAQ's and iPod 101 sections of iLounge.

Well, you can download iTunes first. Just know that iTunes will want to pair itself to your iPod. This means that iTunes will want to completely erase your iPod touch. So just be careful and read each dialog box that comes up. Otherwise you could easily erase your iPod touch to match your current empty iTunes library. It might be better to just copy the content off of your iPod touch first and then install iTunes. The copy process should take only a few hours even on a full 2G 32GB iPod touch so I don't see why iTunes needs to be installed right away.
