View Full Version : Ramblings on my Ipod

Just thought I'd register and post my Ipod experience so far.

There are no questions (and no point) in the story - I merely felt bored. So those in a hurry had better skip this one.

I'm a first time Ipod'er. And it's my first Apple product. I've gone from walkman through minidisc and several cheap Compact Flash mp3 players and arrived at the top - the Ipod.

My digital music collection runs something like 2000 files at the present. All are encoded at 192 Kbps VBR.

I may be the only one quite content with MusicMatch and I don't want to start a war but I've been using MusicMatch since version 4 or so in 1998 I think. I bought a lifetime key for like 20$. Works for me.

I did have to buy a Fireware card "Digitus" at 45 US$ (and this is considered cheap in Denmark - the 15 GB Ipod was 592 US$...) - and sure I've had to reset the Ipod a few times and even do a few formats but that's ok by me. I don't even pay attention to the clicks between songs. I'm sure Apple will fix some issues via firmware. The only thing I miss from my minidisc era is the display on the wired remote.

Transfer times are fabulous. Around one song per second.

However it didn't take me 2 minutes from plugging in my brand new Ipod before I realised that the supplied earbuds wouldn't cut it. Well they're not crappy but I'm used to wearing huge earcups and not caring about my looks... which allowes for great sound on the go.

After surfing this forum for a few hours I knew I wanted the MDR-EX71SL/W ones instead. - The whites :) (see on front of www.audiocubes.com)

Since they're not available in Denmark I ordered them from Audiocubes. I did have to make a paypal account though. Apparently Audiocubes had a few too many bad experiences with Visa cards.

Paypal-registration was a hassle (had to scan and mail several documents and ID cards) but when that was done completing my order at Audiocubes was a breeze. Ordered on May 28th and recieved them from Osaka, Japan on June the 2nd. Very impressive.

And I got lucky! The employee who did the packaging wrote "Gift" on the invoice. This combined with the all japanese envelope made it slip by the danish customs...

Price was 46 US$ plus 12$ shipping. That's 20$ less than the black model will cost in Denmark - when they get it! The same 20$ I saved on customs - and these earplugs are white, man!

Sound quality is very good in my opinion. I don't find the bass excessive at all. Highs are much better than the supplied earbuds. I used to use the EQ-treble booster setting. Now I've gone FLAT.

Try the different sizes of rubber thingies. The medium and large ones made the cords "stick out" - the small ones fits my ears perfectly.

Burnt them in over a few nights (don't know if that was nescessary - but couldn't hurt).
Initially I worried that I wouldn't be able to hear any outside sound. I use my Ipod to and from work - 20 mins on bike each way - through mid-Copenhagen. Volume is set at roughly 80% and I hear all the oohs and aahs in my music. Lots of traffic but no problems hearing car horns :)

I am oh so pleased with my purchase - Ipod and MDR-71's. And I've found answers to all my questions on this forum before and after making my investment.

If you made it this far - thanks!

Kind regards,

Peter, Copenhagen, Denmark

What you're using MusicMatch?!? .... ;)

Enjoy your pod...and I just picked-up MDR-71's (but no pod yet :() they're a great improvement over any typical earbud (and *portable* headphones -- i.e. streetstyle, etc.)....next step up is Shure's and Ety's (but so is the $$$).
