1st gen phone earpiece problem

I have an iPhone that I always have a hard time hearing out of. It doesn't to seem to have any noise cancelling. I drive a relatively loud vehicle that has a lot of driving noise while on the interstate. I can't hear too much while driving

Is this common for iPhones?

Are you saying you can't hear to well while holding the iPhone up to your face while driving a loud vehicle on the interstate? Not to mention I'm pretty sure the iPhone doesn't have noise canceling to begin with, that's more of a headset thing.
