I want to play an album as an album on my iphone, as I can on an ipod....however, when I press the shuffle option, it will only shuffle all the songs in the phone.
has anybody any ideas how to do this?
many thanks......:) :)

Click the album first and the first song should be Shuffle. I'm guessing you're hitting shuffle from the main page?

yes, that is fine, but when it has played that album it starts the same album again.....on the ipod you can randomly play all the albums in your collection without selecting them individually

I'm confused now, now you want to play all the songs?
If you want to play all songs on random click all songs and the first song will be shuffle.
I'm scratching my head now :(

no, what i want to do is play all the albums in a random way rather than play all the songs randomly

Ah, I understand, so it'll random an album, play all the songs, then random another album?
Well as far as I know you can't do that, unless someone knows of a playlist option

I think he means album shuffle, playing all the songs of an album then switching to another one randomly and playing all that album's songs in order. No, the iPhone doesn't have that feature, but I think that jailbroken phones do using some app. I've never cared much for the feature though so I haven't checked.

yes thats right.....I use the feature when I am driving as it saves having to take the phone in my hand and then get picked off by the plod!! but it just seems odd that i can do it on a basis ipod, but cant do it on an iphone...maybe it is something to suggest as an upgrade

Don't do that, because suggesting improvements means the iPhone isn't perfect, and if you bring it up Apple will be sure to never let it happen! :P

The failure of the iPhone OS to include "shuffle by album" is a key reason I regard the iPhone and touch to be half-arsed tech demos at this point.
If my first gen mini could do it, there's no reason after nearly 2 years of public development they can't match the functionality of any non-iPhone OS based iPods.

There was a user around here ("Black ..." something or other?) who posted a detailed way to hack the Shuffle Album feature, but obviously that requires jailbreaking.

Apparently Apple thinks it can get away with not including basic features if they include "innovative", new, features.
...
There's still room for this functionality in an update though, the user that the poster above me mentioned proved that (he also found an auto-correct toggle back then, and Apple gave us that in 2.2)

LOL @ you Code Monkey. A half arsed tech demo? It clearly does many things above and beyond what any other mp3 player can do. And although Apple touted the iphone as "The world's best ipod," it is still far from the worst. Keep using your ipod mini.

The iPhone and iPod touch are half-arsed products, nothing more. I mean, wow, they've managed to attract the same barely paid programmers that have been writing widgets for Palms and Blackberries for the past decade, how innovative
When it comes to playing media, they do nothing better than the clickwheel iPods and some things, e.g. shuffling albums, worse, and that's really all I care about. When they actually work as good as a clickwheel iPod for playing media then, and only then, will the nigh-useless gimmick features begin to figure into their value for me.
