If you have the first iPhone, can you upgrade to future iPhones after 2 years or do you have to buy a new one?

After your 2 year contract, you can buy any cell phone for the same price as starting a new plan.
I don't think AT&T will let you exchange your iPhone for the new model though for a discount, you'll just have to buy a new one at the special price.

that really sucks especially if the newer iPhones have upgrades that the older iPhones can't get such as a camera.

I have the first iPhone that I bought about a year ago and I'm eligible for an upgrade. I think all 1st gen iPhone users are eligible because we paid full price for the phone. You can go to your AT&T account online and check.

well my story is complicated. my mom had the first gen iphone and she bought the 3g one. she gave me the older one so i could have an iphone. do you think i still would be able to upgrade?

If I remember right AT&T let the first generation iPhone owners purchase the 3G iPhone for a cheaper then a full retail, but more expensive then a new line.
You can upgrade your cell phone at anytime, but you'll either be charged for an early upgrade fee or you'll have to pay full retail.

If you had the first iPhone you were able to upgrade like it was a new line or end of contract. You were only able to if you owned it by a certain date. If your mom got her 3g then that date had passed so it's 2 years from when your last contract was signed

Nope.
There was another thread on this exact subject.
True, AT&T will let u "upgrade" to another phone at a discount.
Unfortunately the iPhone is not one of them. Blame it on supply&demand.
So that we're clear, u can upgrade your iPhone anytime, u just have to fork out the full$.

You could always sell your current one.
I may be wrong, but didn't AT&T offer prices of $399 and $499 for upgrading from the 2G to the 3G? Hm..

That's the price for upgrading from anything without a current upgrade
