I would like to use WiFi on my iPhone at home, at a friend's place or in a coffee shop, but I don't want to be defaulting to WiFi when I'm somewhere where there is just a small amount of signal that might register on my phone. This causes me to get a poor connection and I end up having to go to settings and turn off WiFi, so I can get back on the cellular network.

Question I have --- can you set up the phone to only access certain WiFi points and stay on cellular otherwise?

Thanks.

I might be mistaken an iPhone doesnt automatically connect to a WiFi location, it asks you if you want to connect to a WiFi spot. You choose no and it will connect using 3G.

Nope. If I have WiFi turned on, it will connect to any WiFi network in the area.

Something must be wrong. What my setting say is this:

"Known networks will be joined automatically. If no know networks are available, you will be asked before joining a new network".

Could it be that you are visiting the same spots and have accepted these networks before, therefore they are "known" networks and that is why it will join you automatically.

I have never heard of a device that automatically joins you. What if its not a public WiFi. (Protected) what does it do then?

Basically if you've joined a network, and were able to establish a connection, you will automatically be signed into that network the next time you go there.
For example when I go out driving I leave my wi-fi on and when I come back I'll be automatically back on the wi-fi without having to do anything.
Automatically joining happens all the time, just like when I boot my laptop up.

Thats exactly right Rey, but Tivo is insunuating that if there is a wifi conection it will connect instantly. When you leave your wifi on and leave your "network" doesnt it ask you everytime you try to go online and there is a wifi network close by? It shouldnt connect your automatically. Right?
