View Full Version : Are you ready for a MAJOR iPhone update this year? :D

I sure am.

The iPhone2,1 software update suggests a major change. The 3G was iPhone1,2, since it basically just had some minor hardware and software adjustments to rectify what the first iPhone didn't have. Now however, I sense Apple wants to wow us again, rather than just giving us an update. This time, they want to go ahead of the competition, especially with touchscreen phones suddenly becoming the new race.

Some features I assume we'll get: That faster processor the touch has, maybe even better. With it, comes flash and background apps, copy/paste, and real push. PUSH!!
A better battery - well, I assume Apple wouldn't want another 3G battery on its hands, and if they plan on getting a faster processor with backgrounding, a better battery is needed. So I'm guessing the iPhone will become a bit thicker this year, but not too much - we all know how design-conscious Apple is.
Some iPod adjustments? Okay, so you use the Remote app, right? Well, that App represents everything wrong with the iPod.app. A-I need a way to tell what long titles are, rather than them just giving me 3 dots. B-I need a TV Shows/Movies tab. C-Search box. D- And this isn't in the Remote app either - that "More" button has to go. Remove it, center the 4 other tabs, and add arrows on their left and right. Click the right one, that bottom black bar will now show you your second list of tabs.
On another note, they better provide Call Duration. I wanna know how long I talked to the person, damn! Just add it under that arrow thing near the names in "Recents".
Not to mention the ability to delete a single SMS rather than the whole conversation, and the "Message Recieved" notification after your recipient recieves the message. I'd also like to know the character limit to an SMS while writing it (showing how many characters left).
I'm out. But I definitely suspect Apple will have all the above (minus the iPod.app stuff) and more. But I really hope they update the iPod app, especially with the 32GB model coming.

I don't know if it will be that impressive of and update. With the exception of the touch( which is a whole new line ) the iPod didn't change a whole lot from the first gen to the classic. And that's 6 generations. The major differences between the first gen and the classic are what? A non moving click wheel video and a color screen. Besides that just capacity jumps and new designs. I hope I'm wrong but if the iPhone follows the iPod model, it'll be just small changes, capacity, and cosmetics.

The iPhone is just that - a phone. It has a lot more potential for updates and additions, as opposed to the iPod where there was only so much you can do. The possibilities here are limitless, especially with the great amount of consumer demand out and about. Contrary to what people think Apple does listen, albeit less than they should.

Most of your updates are software based, except for the obvious improved hardware, but no additional hardware is mentioned.
I'm just going to assume some sort of design change.

One think for sure they are going to do is combine phone and text to one "app". That way you can check all your messages in one place. Also the home/unlock screen will be more informative, telling you how many new mail messages you have and more info about missed calls, voicemail and messages as well as the day's calendar events. It will be a more usefull screen closer to what one would describe as a "home" page.

I like that idea about calendar events and mail on the unlock screen. Hope it happens

Jason, I know some folks here frown upon this but the ability to see your upcoming calendar events and other information is available on the locked screen if your phone is jailbroken. So if its possibly with a JB application why not an authorized Apple application?

What program is it. I've been missing qik so have been thinking of jailbreaking again

I'm not much of a user for the mail app, and I hardly ever miss more than once call/message at a time, so I'm not too fussed about this. They should give us an option to turn SMS Preview off for good, not just for the lock screen.

But what you're proposing is possible in the form of widgets. I certainly wouldn't mind those on my lock screen, it looks dull with just the time.
Wouldn't count on that text/phone merge though. I don't care much for it either, but the SMS app better open faster, damn.

The battery's a given, but that processor is nowhere near insured. Apple doesn't give major processor upgrades each year for its devices, but I suspect they'll give one for this iPhone for a lot of multi-tasking, as well as gaming.
And maybe they're software based (backgrounding apps, flash) but the faster processor gives way for these, as does the improved battery. So they're a consequence of better hardware, which is why it's major. That faster processor alone is a major update.

What program is it that jailbreaks the phone or what program is it that puts the notifier? I used the iClarified website to jailbreak and the notifier that I use is called Status Notifier with the Lock Notifier widget.
