Is there an app or a program for the computer I can use to make ringtones for my iPhone? (Similiar to Motorola's Phone Tool program?)
I'm thinking having an app or a program specifically for the iphone would be quicker and easier than making them for my old razr and then transferring them, and cheaper then buying them from Apple, especially since a lot of the ones I have on my razr aren;t normal songs that Apple would have.

Are these MP3 that you have that you want to make ringtones?

yeah...mostly. There might some mp4s but they could be changed to mp3s rather easily if I really want to use them.

Before I go into a lenghty explanation, do you know how to make your mp3's into ringtones? Is this what you are trying to do?

Yeah, I know how to do it...I was using Motorola's Phone Tools to make ringtones for my razr for two years.

What is so difficult about using iTunes to convert the MP3s to M4A and renaming to M4R? Why would you need a different tool?

2Tall, did you need instructions on how to do it using itunes? djeaton is correct using itunes is the best way to do it and its pretty simple. Its not difficult djeaton but for someone who doesnt know how to or has been using a program like Motorola Tools its not that straight forward. It requires some renaming and moving things around.

Last time I tried using iTunes to do it the program told me I could only use purchased songs to make ringtones. Is it different now that I have an iPhone? Also, when i goggled it, a lot of sites were saying you had to pay for the song and then pay once again to get it turned into a ringtone.
yes... it's called itunes.

You dont have to pay for it to make it a ringtone. There is a way around it. I will put it simply here and if you know how to nagivate around itunes you can figure it out. If not ask and I will exlain further.
1. Find around 30 seconds of a song that you like. Go into the info of the song and change the start and stop times to reflect those 30 seconds. In my case I use Superstition by Stevie Wonder and I use the start at 4 seconds and the stop at 32 seconds. Gets the whole beginning with no words.
2. Once that is done, you need to convert that mp3 into an AAC song. Go into the preferences of Itunes and change the inporting into AAC instead of MP3.(If your songs are already AAC then you can this step, but you will still have to convert that song into an AAC so that it creates a 30 second version of it. Do this by right clicking on the song and selecting "Convert Song to AAC"
3. Once the covnersion is done, find the 30 second song and then do another right click and select "Open Containining Folder". When the folder is open you need to rename the song to yoursongname.m4r instead of yoursongname.m4v. The "r" makes it a ring tone.
4. Now once the song is changed to a .m4r you need to move that file to the Ringtones folder fould in the itunes music folder.
5. After moving it you need to open itunes and select the "add folder" to libray opetion under file and add that Ringtone folder. The new ringtone will appear under "Ringtones" under your library. That is it. The 30 seconds seems to work best with the iphones.
---Make sure you do the following. Make sure you delete the old 30 second song from your playlists because it will show as an exclamation mark. Maker sure you have the Ringtone folder enabled under the Itunes preferences. (In my case I dont have the radio folder, I used to not have the Ringtone one enabled either since I didnt have any). Make sure you set your iphone to sync the Ringtone folder once you have it connected and ready to sync. Once its synce the ringtone will appear in setting, sounds, ringtones. Last but not least let us know if it worked for you. And if you ever have any questions dont let the others scare you away. Some of us dont mind helping out. These forums are about learning and communicating not about throwing out useless one liners that dont help any one. I know what they mean, you could have found out this information by searching, but sometimes that doesnt always work.

Www.thetones360.com is also a good site. It has premade ringtones and you can make your own. Similar interface when making them to iTunes.

I got that far and but when I open the folder it shows that the song is still and mp3 or mp4.
When I go to the folder and right click to rename it...there is no m4v anywhere.

Is there a reason why songs that I uploaded to the computer from CDs aren't able to be used on those to two sites?
I'm about to say screw it and spend the 10 bucks for iphoneringtonemaker

No it's free. You just go to the site and download or load your mp3 and cut and convert

You are not goint to rename the folder, you are the renaiming the song to a .m4r. So once you are in the folder you right click on the song and choose rename. the change it to a .m4r. Now you say it is still an mp3? Are you sure you are opening the folder for the new 30 second clip? Not the original song the new one that is only 30 seconds long. Make sure you have your preferences set to import songs as AAC.

Yeah...I opened the right folder. And when I right click there is no .m4v at the end of the title...it just shows the title with nothing after it. I'm too aggrivivated by everything else at the moment so I'll worry about it tomorrow.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE ABLE TO SEE YOUR FILE EXTENSIONS. This is an OS setting. If you can't see extensions, then you can't change it can you?

It's good to keep file extensions on anyway for security reasons. I've gotten pictures named pic.jpg.exe for example. Without them on it just looks like pic.jpg
