Save memory on laptop

Hi just got an ipod about a month ago, and have used about 5GB of the 10 GB memory. I would like to know how I can go about deleting the files on my laptop. as I have only got a little HDD space left and would like to free up some memory by deleting tunes out of my itunes folder.Is it possible to do this without the first time I synch the ipod it deleting all the tunes on ipod as well.

You won't be able to autosync otherwise some songs will get deleted, so remember to turn it off. I don't use iTunes, so not sure how to do this, so you might want to post this on the itunes forum.
