This is with WinXP Pro (SP1 and all latest patches)

I have a 3G (I think) iPod (it's a 30GB with the new connectors--at least different than by original iPod).

Anyway, I used to have the Firewire working and for one reason or another it stopped working. I have 1394 on the motherboard and was using that.

So I went out and bought an Adaptect 1394 PCI card and it still didn't work. I have a portable 1394 drive and it works fine.

So today I stopped in at the Apple store and purchased the dual 1394/USB 2.0 dock cable. I connected it to my dock and then to my one of my USB 2.0 ports and windows starting chunking along and then gave me an error:

"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."

This was displayed in the bubble message from the system tray. I clicked on the message and a dialog opened displaying the same message. It had a list with several items in it. The listbox heading was:

"The location of the device is show in bold type."

The devices listed where:

- USB Root Hub (2 ports)
Unknown device (in bold)
Unused port

At the bottom of the window it displayed:

"-Recommendation-

Try reconnecting the device. If Windows does not recognize it, replace the device."

While this error was up, I checked Device Manager and there weren't any troublesome devices listed.

Any ideas? The iPod itself works fine. Plays music and all. Is there some way to master reset this thing (I don't mind if the music is gone, I can resync later).

What happens when you use the firewire portion of the USB2.0 cable that you purchased from the apple store?

MASTER RESETTING ?
that would to be download the ipod updater ...and use RESTORE button and then Update....
....
I would suggest that you use a different computer first ....
...
Is your harddrive mode enabled ?
if yes then when u conenct it with firewire do you see the ipod harddrive in my computer ?
....
wen you connect the firewire to ur ipod does the ipod display do not disconnect message...
....
when connected with firewire is there any indication on Windows or on the iPod that the player is connected ?
......
you need to specify what u mean by 'it stopped working' ?

then u can be helped better....

What do you mean is harddrive mode enabled? Is this something I set in the iPod?

No, nothing at all, that is why I decided to try the USB 2.0 route.

One day I went to use the iPod on the system and it just wasn't recognized. Sounds strange, but that's what happened.

I was using Xplay at the time, but I am wondering if that could cause more problems than it's worth. Anyone want to comment on whether I should reinstall and use it? When I bought the iPod at the local Apple store, the salesperson said XPlay was probably the best and easiest way to use an iPod on Windows (I already owned XPlay so it wasn't as if he was trying to just sell me something).

Anyway, thanks for your help so far...
