Okay - i know you can hook up ipod to a headunit's aux in
but what does it look like? how do i tell if my unit (Seat alana) has one? how to I get to it?

look on the back there should be some type of in/output. If you have a port for a cd changer you can probably use aux in for that head unit. Unfortunately aux inputs are different on each head unit. They may look like a 1/8" female plug (like on the top if the ipod where you plug in earphones) they may have RCA outputs (like on a stereo reciever or TV [you know the red and white plugs] or you may have to buya cd-changer adapter which can look like pretty much anything.

Just be careful, if you pull your head unit out, of any RCA jacks on the back of it. Most (if not all) of these are OUTPUT jacks, intended for connecting the H/U to an external amp. Don't know if hooking these up to your iPods headphone jack (also an output) will damage your iPod, but I sure wouldn't want to find out.
