I don't know if this is true but is the iphone really coming out for verizon or is that just a rumor?

I don't see it happening anytime soon, maybe some day down the road, just a rumor, and a bad one at that

Yeah I just moved from Verizon, their server just wasted way to much of my time, and at least with AT&T I have something more then a calling device. Damn VCast was slow as crap, kind of like trying to run iTunes on a calculator.
I'd say it'll be more then 2 years before Apple's contract to AT&T go up, so by then you can get the newest model for Verizon if that happens :P

I have been told the current iPhone would not work on verizon, something about the different networks verizon and AT&T use. Hope someone smarter than me could clarify that. When I had verizon, they told me their network did not and would not support the iPhone.

Also, apple and at&t have extended their exclusive agreement, so I would say if you switch now you should have no worries.

If you search this topic, you will find a lot of discussion (especially on a mac site that specializes on rumors!).

AT&T uses GSM phones, which is what the iPhone is. T-Mobile also uses GSM which is why you can unlock and head over there. Verizon & Sprint both have CDMA, which a different signal. Hope that clears it up
(There are some phones, like the global phones, that have both CDMA and GSM which is usually the loaner phones you get for overseas)
VCast ruined my library so hardcore, not even funny.
iTunes has been doing a good job, although it does randomly lose my artwork from time to time.

Yeah GSM is pretty standard in the overseas Market, such as Europe,Middle East ans such. Verizon Has the Blackberry Storm, WHICH is Touchscreen Just like the Iphone, and although they do have 3G, But it's more for CDMA(EV-DO) for them. I myself don't think Apple will go too CDMA on their Iphone. BUT you never know. BUT you can always Unlock your phone and use it on ANY GSM carrier abroad, or here.

iPhone won't be coming out for Verizon... ATT has too much of a good thing ($20-$30 more a month for iphone users) too lose that stranglehold.

s2ipod2u, unless you are a top Apple or AT&T executive, and my guess is you're not, there is no way to know this for sure. There have been rumors that the next iphone, which may be coming out during summer would be compatible with Verizon's network. I do believe it is unlikely though, because Apple would have to completely reverse engineer the phone to work with different services and technologies.

The contract between AT&T and Apple will not allow a CDMA version made before 2012 for release in the United States.

Here's the USA Today article (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/wireless/2007-05-21-at&t-iphone_N.htm)

you are right, i am not an apple exec, (i had to re-read my post to make sure i did not claim to be) i was just trying to be helpful to the OP and give accurate information.

my main point was simply that if the OP is going to switch to buy a current iphone soon, as was indicated in one of his/her other posts, then the current phone will not work on verizon. that is fact. i just did not know the correct way to explain why. another poster picked me up on that.

and though i am not an att or apple exec, i can read. and when i read a FACT that the two companies have signed a deal to make their EXCLUSIVE agreement LONGER, i can conclude that this means there will be no verizon iphone soon. of course that may be wrong. but as you posted all this verizon talk has been based on RUMORS (why I directed the OP to check out macrumors for more info). here is a link: http://www.macrumors.com/2008/09/29/verizon-iphone-in-2009-unlikely/
i have not seen an official statement from att or verizon that would indicate any change as soon as this summer.

also, as others have pointed out, there would be little reason for att to give up this cash cow. research (not rumors) has shown iphone customers have a bigger monthly bill (with the data plan), and are more likely to stick with att because they are less likely to trade in their phones.

Arrrhhhh, stop asking if the iPhone will work with Verizon! At least not until 2012 as mentioned.

Having 2 dissimilar carriers is just not Apple's style. When Steve Jobs permanently retires, when ask again.

It's beyond "unlikely." It's as likely as the "Big 3" making money anytime soon.

I'd much rather another company step up to the plate, then to have more iPhones.
I'm looking at you NVIDIA, I've been waiting for your APX and Tegra 650 since last year.
An NVIDIA hardware and Google Andriod software phone should be a home run, plus battery life would be amazing since the Tegra takes 1 WATT to run. Slap on an OLED and I'll be ready to drop a kidney for one. xD

NVIDIA? the company that makes snazzy graphic cards that REQUIRE an auxiliar fan on their cards 'coz they run so hot (hot=power drainer). When I think of leader on portable, efficient chips, kind hard to think of NVIDIA.

Sure. When cellphones are obsolete every 18 months... how many kidneys do u have?

I was just reading the "what to get for new iPhone" thread, and I realize Apple already pulled away the bangwagon. It's not just the iPhone hardware, is all the sideshow that iPhone brings that make it so attractive. Any potential competitor have the work cut out for them.

NVIDIA has the smallest chips out right now, that even blow the Intel Atom out of the water. I know you don't think of NVIDIA for mobile, but from the spec's these things are amazing.

Just take a look at the spec's for the Tegra 600 series (their media devices) and Tegra APX (phones).
Here's the first NVIDIA Tegra APX youtube search

Oh and screw the special connectors for video out, they have 1080p HDMI output :P
Oh and they can support 12mp cameras

Hope yer right. I recall this company... what's its name? had a x86 processor said to push notebook to 10 hours between charges... TRANSMETA. They still in business?

ReyZero

I've never heard of transmeta :P Quick google shows that it was consumed by Novafora, although from the looks of it Trasmeta was ahead of their time. At least NVIDIA seems to be a big competitor, and they have the units out, just awaiting finalization and mass production :D
