I have a big problem with my new 30Gb when using it as a FireWire hard disk. When I try to copy a folder or a file larger than 10 mb from iPod to Mac the process freezes, the Finder freezes as well until I reset the iPod. It happened on three different Macs so I decided that the problem is in iPod. It bothers me very much because I can never be sure that I'll be able to read back the files I copied onto the iPod :((
does anybody have similar problem?

Hey gatek - Welcome to iPodlounge! :)
What version of Mac OS are you running?
I had periodic freezing problems when copying large numbers of MP3s to my iPod on a FW "daisy-chain" (i.e., external HDD containing my iTunes library connected to my iBook's only FW port, and my iPod connected to the spare FW port on the back of the external FW HDD) when I was running OS 10.1.x. These problems went away after upgrading to Jaguar (OS 10.2).

Hi Tom, thank for your reply :)
I'm running Jaguar. And it freezes not only when I copy mp3's but any large files.
Actually my problem got worse since I posted this message. Last time I connected iPod to the mac it immediately started scan disk, then reset, then again scan disk ... over and over, until I disconnected it. After reset everything seemed to work but no music on iPod. Contacts and notes are OK, but no music and no playlists at all. I tried to connect it to different macs - everytime it immediately started scandisk :( My only hope is that something's wrong with the cable.

Does this Apple knowledgebase article describe your symptoms?:

I've had that problem with an external FireWire drive (not my iPod), but another guy had it on his iPod, here:

But, two nights ago, after the external drive locked up and I shut it off, it made a funny noise and died. No more power. So, I'd ask for a warranty replacement.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about above - it occured to me when I was running 10.1.
But, gatek said he was running Jaguar (10.2), so this shouldn't be the problem.
Yeah, gatek, the scandisks make it sound like you might be having a hardware problem with your iPod's HDD. If I were you, I'd call Apple Support (http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html) to see about warranty repair / replacement.
