If apple could make the iPod's battery removable, then they could sell extra batteries for people who are going on long journeys or won't be able to charge their ipod for a long time. You could charge both batteries before you go and so would have double as much playtime.

It would also make sense because the batteries must eventually die out, so making it replaceable is economical, although I guess not for Apple who would like to sell you a whole new iPod.

Actually for gen 2 ipods, you can buy batteries to replace used ones...I think I saw somewhere that new gen 3 models will have batteries available soon...

Here is the link to get gen 2 batteries (they are just pda batteries actually): http://www.pdasmart.com/ipodpartscenter.htm

Thats quite good, but I meant a battery that could be replaced on the go, rather than having to open up your ipod with a screwdriver.

Yeah, that would have been a welcomed improvement, perhaps for gen 4...hmmm, from what I know though, lithium-ion batteries (like the ones that Ipods have and also my sony md-nz10 player...) are quite volatile, therefore, if a replacement battery is implemented for the next generation ipods, it would be nickel batteries (like the infamous "gum stick batteries" for some cd/mp3 and md players)...hmmmm, I think this will be the cases, unless there are fabulous advances in energy storage technology in the near future...(solar anyone?!)
