Let's put it this way: I don't have even 1 song on my iTouch. I use it for apps, games, quick internet, and a couple of episodes of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 and I LOVE it and use it every single day for kicks.

15 is a bit older than "just a kid" (I'm thinking 9 is "just a kid);)

I would have LOVED this at 15. if you like hand held video games, this rules. if you like a usic player, this rules. If you like a quick internet connection in the palm of your hand, this is a little small but still very cool without having to go to your desktop.

What can i say. If you have the funds for one, buy it and enjoy the heck outta it like i am

I would try to get the most storage that you can, primarily if you plan on storing video. I had the 16G, lost it, and thought that I would just use my old 5.5 80g. Within a week I had bought a 32G. I could not live without the touch.

Yes, you can put DVDs on to a touch - BUT you'll have to rip & convert them.

Simplest way is probably to use HandBrake.
But to get the best quality (at least IMO) you'll need to use MeGui.

I just bought my second Touch, so I would vote yes! :)

I got a 2G iPod Touch 32 gig for $280 and spent $189.26 on apps (not kidding :(). Couldn't afford that so I bought a 1G iPod Touch 16 gig for $200 and just jailbroke it so I can get games for free and not spend any more money on apps.

That's $669.26 -eek- Well that's about 11 videogames at full price (for the 360, PS3, etc) and since I don't buy those, I figure it's the same expense as a serious gamer. All the apps I bought will last me for years, though :D

The iPod touch is the most feature packed iPod on the market. It is worth it if you want to mess around with all those extra features. It isn't worth it if you want to carry around all your audio and video content at 16GB (even 32GB) doesn't translate to much especially when you factor in videos. It seems like you have to compromise with each iPod. The iPod touch compromises on storage space (and is more expensive) while the iPod classic doesn't have as many features.

The only thing I'll add is, if you're going to buy a Touch see if your parents have a "platinum" type credit card, one that offers buyer protection. Many credit cards offer this for free, which not only protects you from loss, theft or user-damage for the first 90 days, it also extends the warranty by a year. If this is an option and your parents would be willing to let you pay them to put it on their card, then I highly recommend it. My Amex card completely reimbursed my son (actually, me) when his 1G mini died in it's 22nd month, and it covered my other son's 2 month old Classic that was stolen from his locker.

i got my ipod touch for xmas and i have used it everyday i got the 8gb 2nd generation one, i have 21 albums on there and 5 full films which i have not watched yet im saving them for a day im not near a tv, i bought a jvc adapter for my ipod so i can connect my ipod to my car stereo without wires thats the only time i listen to music on my touch. i downloaded loads of free apps and games from itunes and i play them loads and use the internet lots as well when i dont want to get my laptop out, the only down side is there is no flash player. i think the 8gb is a not bad price but i would not pay that extra money for 16gb/32gb

There is no doubt about it The I touch is by far and enlarge the BEST hi tech device on the market. It is extremely useful. You can basically do anything you want to with it. MINI computer comes to mind.
web, e-mail, information, radio, Music, video, games, just about anything..
Get the big one right off the bat you can load more FULL LENGTH feature films that way.
32 gig is the way to go for the extra $100.00 it is worth it.

The Touch is AWESOME to say the least. Your only 15 too...Man once you get a touch, you won't want anything else. Apple did a great job with the touch..

The touch is totally worth the money. It's perfect for on the go games, movies, email, and Internet. I only have a few songs on mine because I have so many sweet apps.

This is a very subjective question.

Objectively, I'd say no it's not worth it. A 32GB solid state HD runs about $75 these days. So essentially for the nice package and killer UI you're paying $320. If it's worth that much to you, then I suppose it's worth it.

I however can't justify paying retail...it's practically robbery if you ask me

Worth it? I don't think its worth it myself, but I'm a music/video fan more so than a apps/internet fan. If you are interested in games, internet, apps, etc. then it could be worth it for you, but as far as a iPod goes I don't like it and would rather have the tactile feedback of the click wheel and the capacity of the classic.

if you need a phone just save up for the iphone. it is so much easier than carrying a touch and a phone around. my friend has a cell and a touch and says that he would do anything to just have as one device because he looses them all the time. i have the iphone and i think it is so much better than the touch becuase you can get internet everywhere.

The battery performance on the iPhone is poor compared to the iPod Touch. Not to mention the $100 a month data plan.

Its a matter of preference, I actually prefer two devices to one mainly because there isn't a single phone out there that could continually play music about 6hrs at work, browse the internet, run apps/games, watch video and still have enough charge to support cell phone functions.

You are right. Why even bother with laptop computers as they do nothing more than allow you to browse the internet over wi-fi. That is soo dumb, you should just go with a cellphone that can access the internet everywhere! Teh tuch is teh sucksorz, IphoneZ all teh wayz!

Granted Apple products in general are a little more then most players, they are of a higher quality. Last time I checked I can't grab a harddrive and plug in headphones. You're paying for a screen, battery, motherboard, radio, software, and more, on top of the drive. Besides, Apple isn't going to just release new iPods whenever the memory price goes down, it'll happen that once a year when they want it to. Why? Because they can.

Are you joking.

I'd hate to give someone a gift just to tell them that they need to pay the monthly fee for 2 years. If you're looking for what the iPhone does minus the phone, there's your flat fee to pay for the device.

As to the orgional question, if you're looking for a device for music/video/internet, the iPod touch pratically sells itself, on top of the app' store. It's a great device and there isn't a whole lot of products to compare it to.

Iphone 16 Gig bare minimum cost to me = $299 + $60 x 36 (cheapest contract) = $2,459
Wow, almost 2500 bucks. Plus taxes, network access fees, 911 fees, etc.

Ipod touch 32gig + my current phone bare minimum cost $400 + $17.50 x 36 (my current phone contract, handset was free) = $1030 (plus taxes, network access fees, etc)

Less than half the cost for a higher capacity, longer battery life ipod. Plus a phone that also has longer battery life. What do i miss out on? Data access outside of wifi networks. I dunno about you but that's not exactly worth $1500 ($40 a month) to me.

Iphone is cost effective for some folks, just not for me.

My own opinion is that the touch and the iPhone are currently overpriced tech demos that do nothing as well as other devices. Music? Give me my nano. Video? Give me my nano or, better yet, my computer or DVD player; can't say I've ever watched video on the go, battery life is still too anemic and when I'm on the go, well, I'm on the GO. Phone calls? TrakPhone for less than $5/month average cost is a better choice in my book. Games? If I have a situation for portable game playing, my DS has never left me wanting. Applications, web browsing, etc.? I've got a computer with a 21" widescreen monitor - there's nothing about these devices I ever find myself wishing I had access to on the go. The one device/app I would like access to, a GPS navigator, neither the iPhone or touch can do.

It's ironic that a few years ago the oft repeated mantra regarding calls for many functions on the iPod were met with jeers about how we didn't need no steenkin' PDA. Well, now we have a steenkin' PDA and a steenkin' PDA strapped to an overpriced cell phone, and people love it, I dont' get it.

Maybe in another year or two, but right now, it's paying a whole lot of money for gimmicks.

I actually had a 4Gen. Nano for a while, and returned it for the Touch, and while some of the games that I loved that were only available for the regular iPods (i.e. Bomberman Classic, Song Summoner) I have no regrets returning it. It was well worth the additional 100$.

The touch is not only good for games and apps, but I find myself being able to do things easier with it. If I'm doing my homework, I can be comfy on my bed or on the couch and be on my school's website checking class notes to help me study. I can also be on AIM wherever in my house. Before I leave for school or work, I can have the current weather at the push of a button.

Getting to the games and apps. There are a great deal of fun free games, such as Morocco (aka, Othello), Mancala, solitare, TapDefense, etc. And the games that aren't free are also very good, such as the Bust-a-Move copy, Bubble Bash as well as Brother in Arms.

I really think you'll like it, and a kid your age will most definately get a lot of use out of it. Do your research and make a list of the pros and cons of buying one, eventually its going to have to be your decision and yours alone whether you want one or not. If you do buy one, buy a good case (I recommend SwitchEasy's stuff) and order it a week before you actually buy the touch, that way you'll be good to go when you do

That would be insane ... I'd have oodles of Micro SD cards if that were the case :D

I'd need to re-design an iPod Touch case that allowed me to also carry dozens of MicroSD's along with it :D

Micro SD is a newer standard of SD cards. It is basically a very small memory card that is used by most new cellphones, a bunch of new portable audio players, and so on. Here is a picture (the bigger adapter is the same size of a standard SD card):
http://www.pjcook.com/images/UploadPhotoEasy/img_883_kingston-1gb-microsd-card.jpg

My only complaint about MicroSD is that it is still rather expensive (Best Buy will charge about $30 for an 8GB card) and the highest capacity that anyone can get right now is 8GB. I would much prefer SDHC (a different SD card standard, the HC stands for High Capacity) support as you can purchase a 32GB SDHC card for about $100, a 16GB card for $20, and an 8GB card for $12. I would have repurchased a 2G 32GB iPod touch had it come with a SDHC slot. That way I could have doubled its capacity for $100. However, Apple isn't too keen on supporting external memory. Part of the reason for this is because higher capacity iPods are always coming out. Not supporting memory expansion is a way for Apple to force you into buying a new player. Microsoft does this, Archos does this, and Creative used to do it.

Best Buy prices suck, I can get an 8GB on Amazon for $10.
Although the next jump to 16GB is $50+.
And as you commented that each new iPod gets bigger is the exact reason why people keep buying them, no one would buy them if they could just buy a new card. :P
I don't know why they got to be so greedy in MP3 players, better off making something unique (say when the first touch came out) so people buy it for that, rather then just capacity changes. Although I could be barking up a flame war here. Story short, MP3 players are so damn expensive for something so simple

And as you commented that each new iPod gets bigger is the exact reason why people keep buying them, no one would buy them if they could just buy a new card. :PI think capacity sells fewer new units than you think. There's a very vocal set of capacity nuts on these boards, but consumer polls repeatedly show that, for the vast majority of buyers, mp3 player capacities already surpassed their collections a few years ago.

Capacity is just one more carrot on the stick, but it's hardly the most important one.

Yes, Best Buy prices do suck but the majority of people buy their electronics from Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Target. That is why Blu-ray is having a hard time really taking over the market. Places like Amazon.com are charging $19.99-$22.99 for Blu-ray releases yet Best Buy is charging $29.99-$34.99.

I think capacity sells fewer new units than you think.

I know of many people who upgrade their iPod nanos and standard iPods simply because their current models don't hold enough. These are not capacity nuts either, they are simply people who want to increase their storage. So an upgrade in capacity sells more units than you may think but it is not THE most important selling point. Upgrades in storage capacity tend to sell more units with smaller iPods.

Nah... simplest and best way is using this, but it costs $100.

Pinnacle Transfer ... just google it.... I am too new to post links, it says.

No, just no. I am sorry but it doesn't make any sense to spend $100 on a device when free software can do a much better job. Pinnacle's device requires that you have a DVD player other than your computer. You then plug the DVD player into the device and let the movie play. A 2 hour movie will take 2 hours to record. Free software can rip a DVD in about 15 minutes and then other free software can encode a movie in a few hours. This process is free, completely digital, and provides higher quality than some $100 device.

I use something called 123DVD Gold, although you can buy the iPod version seperatly for like $10 or so, and it's the best converter I've used so far, after trying several others.
I literally slap it in, and either hit main movie (it finds the longest track) or click which ones I want, and it's done within 30 minutes. You can decide the kps for audio and video, and resolutions, and I'm using the smallest settings which puts each hour of video at around 250mb.
