Hello!

My friend and I were playing around with our iPod touches this morning (he has a 1st gen, I have a 2nd gen)

It seems as if he can hit some of the WiFi hotspots nearby with his 1st Gen that I cannot with my 2nd gen?? Is the second gen's wireless weaker than the 1st gen?

Also, on hotspots we can both hit, we both load WifiTrak (very good wifi finder--I recommend it) and was maybe 10-15% better than mine was....

Anyone else notice this?

I don't notice this. I think they both use the same hardware so there shouldn't be a difference. It is pretty common for two portable devices to get two different strengths when reading wi-fi networks. I have a PDA that normally gets about a 15-20% higher signal than both my 1G and 2G iPod touch models. My two roommates both have the same notebook and were both located 10 ft away from the router. One of them always received a higher signal than the other.

Wow, Apple chose to get cheap with Wifi on the second generation going with the Broadcom chip versus using the superior performing Marvell chip that they use in the iPhones both gen and the first gen iPod Touch, check out the YouTube videos because I am new here I cannot post the link but searching YouTube for wifi performance 1gen ipod touch vs 2nd gen you should see for yourself.

when i used one at Circuit City (:shake: they were such a great store) when i was looking for deals before they closed; i connected my 1st gen to their free wi-fi along side a 2nd gen display model, and compared speed, going to the exact same websites at the same time, and both the iPods were the exact same speed. I would guess that they use the same hardware.
