View Full Version : Does the amount of media/info stored on the iPhone affect the performance at all?

I have a 16GB iPhone 3G, pretty new still. It has 14.6 GB available space, and so far, I've filled 13, around 1GB of which is apps (which is weird because I only have 900MB's worth of apps on my PC, -any idea why?) and 9.5GB's worth of video, with the rest being music. I would fill it all, but I wanted to make sure if it'll affect performance. It's already performing sub-par, with the iPod app taking around 2-3 seconds to start up, and many others of the original apps not opening directly. Is this normal or is it because I have so much stored?

Have you tried resetting the phone? I have noticed that when mine gets sluggish resetting it helps quite a bit. I have about half of my 8Gb filled and it seems ok to me.

You just have to fill it and find out. I have the 16GB as well, and it has 4GB free, with about 13 apps and music. I have not experienced a performance slowdown at all.

I've actually maxed my iPhone memory out once, it said the free space was "zero" not 0.
I didn't notice any real performance issues for the few things that I used, but I shortly deleted a movie since I was unsure if I could browse, or if my application wouldn't save anymore data.
I've been sitting under 100mbs and I haven't noticed any obvious delays. There could be under a second on some application start ups, but nothing I'd get frantic about.
I'll post again if anything starts getting slugish.

I rebooted, though I've done that quite a few times since I bought the phone. It's faster, but not as fast as I'd hoped. The settings are usually the longest to open - I press it, the bars immediately show (the taskbar and the one under it that should read "Settings"), but without text on them. Wait 3 seconds, everything appears. The iPod is similar, with maybe 2 seconds to load. (The top and bottom bars, one blue and one black, show, then wait 2 seconds, the text and the list show). Is this normal?
I just wanted to check how long this takes for other users.
It's nothing I can't live with, but I wanted to check if this is normal or not, and if it's because of the amount of storage.

P.S. I timed the reboot. It took exactly 1 minute and 25 seconds to load.
And any idea why iTunes shows me "1.1 GB" Apps when I've only installed like 900MB's worth?

I'm not sure if application data (such as save files) are in the application section of the memory, or other.
If you mean you only have 900MB showing on the PC, maybe it hasn't transferred some applications that you've purchased on your iPhone. Anyway, it should be either one of those two.

It's neither. I'm pretty sure app data is filed under other, and at any rate, I have only had the iPhone a few days, so even if it was under apps it shouldn't be nearly this much. Plus, I have downloaded I apps from the iPhone's app store. Any feedback on your load times also?

That was my comment Jimmy, you downloaded the applications on your iPhone but they haven't transfered to your PC yet, thus your iPhone has more app data then your pc
As for load times, it hasn't changes long enough to notice any difference, although I'm not sitting around with a stopwatch

Unbelievable. That's what the iPhone's auto-correct does. I apologize on its behalf. What I wanted to say was that I have not downloaded any apps from the iPhone itself. So it's neither of your reasons.

Could you just please check how many seconds the Settings screen takes to appear fully? I'd really appreciate it. I just want to make sure mine isn't (much) slower than normal.

Without rebooting or anything, it took 2 seconds for the settings page to appear. It also appears all at once, not like pictures/text missing.

As for your application information, my only idea is that either 1) you havn't loaded every application onto your iPhone, or 2) it's leaving older versions for some reason (such as an application name change). I've had it happen to me twice, but they auto-corrected themself after another sync (was during when Apple changed how updating applications worked, they used to not go into the recycle bin after updating)
You might want to check your application folder and make sure there aren't multiple versions of the same thing

Alright, mine usually takes 2-3 seconds so it's good.

:) I didn't mean pictures/text missing, I just meant that first, the layout appears (the gray background and the top 2 bars - the standard one and the one where "Settings" will be written in a moment). This layout appears directly when I press Settings, then 2-3 second wait, and the full Settings page shows (as in: Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, Fetch New Data, etc.) I'm sure this is normal.

I checked, no doubles. That's 250MB taken. Wow... why on earth is the difference so big. Does anyone have the same problem?
