My router uses WPA I believe.
The model is: 3800HGV-B
Before I buy an iPod touch, I'd like to know if I can use my router for WiFi features.
(I will be getting a 2nd gen if it matters)

It should work with any wireless router.

I recently replaced my LinkSys router with a D-Link DGL4500 and the Touch connected without any problems. It also worked with the LinkSys router. My problem is now my Palm T/X does not work with the dlink. Oh well, as long as I have one connected.

Apple Airport Extreme definitely works.

I'd look to buy from someone with a good return policy :) It helps in case you have problems...

the touch supports 802.11b/g
so as long as your router is one of them, you will be fine. in many cases people are running g. it is the most common type.

That's not always true - there have been a lot of people who have issues connecting to routers - I think the Linksys have been the most problematic. You SHOULD be able to use them, but sometimes you may need to update firmware or meddle with settings which many users are not comfortable with...

Anything with 802.11B/G should work just fine, i'm sure. If it doesn't work then you might have a conflicting security feature (WEP, WPA/2) so try turning them off and trying again.

I have a Netgear WGR614 v1 B/G router that the IPOD Touch 2nd gen would not work with. It would see the SSID, no encryption, but get 169.xxx.xxx.xxx as a IP address. No matter what I did, it would not work; updated the router firmware, reset it, ect. This router was maybe 4 yrs old.
At the same time, I COULD get on a neighbor’s router (weak signal) and get to Yahoo.
I also had a laptop with me, and connected to Yahoo through the same Netgear wireless router, but still could not get the IPOD to get a usable IP address. I would say there is some subtle incompatibility, but what that is I don’t know.
I purchased and new Linksys WRT54G2 and it worked out of the box. I enabled WPA2 security and again no problems.
