Do the smart playlists on a Ipod Touch 2G automatically live update like they do on Itunes or will they only update when they are synced.

The smart playlists are on your computer. iTunes will live update them anytime you make any changes in your library. Then, when you plug your iPod into your computer, iTunes will copy the new playlist over to your iPod and add or delete any songs on your iPod if need be.
You will need to keep plugging your iPod into your computer but this is normal: you need a computer to sync content to your iPod.

But I think the OP is asking about smart playlists on the Touch, in which case yes they do live update on the fly without having to re-sync to iTunes. However, in order to see the changes you do have to back out of the playlist and come back in.

Oh, I do think they are talking about smart playlists made with the iPod touch itself. In that case you already answered their question.

I use a smart playlist to sync with my touch, since I have more music than will fit on the iPod. Problem is, when I look in the Devices list when my iPod touch is plugged in, I see not only the Smart Playlist that I use to sync music with my iPod touch, but also two other smart playlists in iTunes. Why am I seeing this? It's not a big deal, but it sure is a bit annoying to see other playlists on there than the only one I select through the Music tab for my iPod touch.

P'bly your "main" playlist (the one you distinctly sync to the iPod) uses those other two playlists as part of its criteria. Smart playlists on an iPod are indeed smart (they evaluate the criteria right on the iPod), and in order to be that way, they need to have other SPLs they draw from on-hand as well.

Like I said, it's not a bother, more an annoyance that doesn't make sense to me. Thanks for the reply!

Kind -- Does Not Contain -- Video
(use Kind, not Video Kind)
For some reason, smart playlists that happen to pick up videos get auto-sync'd to the Touch (and other models?) even if you don't have them selected for sync'ing.
