I have tried using an FM modulator, and I was very disappointed with the clarity. Now, I am looking for a better alternative. The only problem is that my stock head unit does not have an auxilary line in for my iPod, and it is a strange 6-disc changer head unit that would be difficult to replace with an after-market head unit. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or if there are some other alternatives to fix this predicament.

Thanks.

If your stereo has a CD Changer port for adding an external CD Changer, you can check out http://www.logjamelectronics.com for an auxiliary input converter, or http://icelink.densionusa.com/ for an ICE-Link iPod Connection Kit for your Xterra. The benefit of the ICE-Link is that your stereo controls will control the iPod.

The Nissan/Bose systems with the in-dash 6 CD changer's don't have an aux input jack (at least based on my experience with a Maxima). So the only thing that will work is an FM modulator.

See, the bottom picture on this page for a description of the problem:

Luckily, I had good luck with a hardwired modulator.

The only other alternative is to replace the headunit. Note that several places (including Crutchfield) sell wiring harness adapters that allow you to use a new headunit while still keeping the Bose amplifier (in the trunk) and the speakers.
