View Full Version : Desktop speaker systems: which ones 'do' charge the 'Touch'?
I have read some of the systems don't actually charge the Touch. I also read this to be true with some of the automotive connections.
Thanks!

I bought the new Bose portable speaker dock and it will charge and play the 2nd gen Ipod Touch. Im not sure about the non-portable model of it because the design is different. As far as automotive receivers, a lot of them will not work with the 2nd gen touch. If you are looking at car audio stuff, the best be is to go to Crutchfield. com and under the hands on section of the product you are looking at, it will tell you exactly what model Ipods work with it. Or you can just call them and they will help you out.

The newer systems tend to be fully compatible with the 1G and 2G iPod touch while the older ones (released prior to the 1G iPod touch) will only play audio and not charge the iPods. However, there is a 3rd party adapter to make older accessories charge newer iPods along with playing audio.
As talontsi stated, the same goes for car audio systems. Some newer CD decks will play and charge the newer iPods (even the 1G or 2G iPod touch) using a direct USB connection. 3rd party car audio chargers (they charge iPods using either the 12V plug or the cigarette lighter) may or may not work with a 1G or 2G iPod touch even if they are new. Your best bet would be to browse Apple's store to see which ones are known to fully work with the iPod touch. Either that or visit the manufacturer's website.
The issue is that Apple has done away with iPods being able to accept a 12V input for power, they now only accept 5V. The older accessories (speaker systems, car decks, etc.) would use 12V to power iPods. This was their way of getting around having to conform to Apple's newer 5V standards. Why change something if the older connection still works? That was all fine until Apple forced 5V. Now manufacturers had to go back and change their accessories to use the newer standard.
As I said there is a connector that will step down the 12V to 5V. The only problem is that its compatibility seems to be sketchy. It will work with some accessories while it won't with others.

I bought one of those and it works great with everything I have to test it on. Charges my 2G Touch in the car and on 3 different speakers that wouldn't charge it before. Also works with an auxiliary battery I bought for my Video 60 a couple years ago. Without the adaptor, the battery does nothing when I plug the Touch into it. With the adaptor, the external battery charges the Touch battery. The adaptor doesn't affect any of the normal iPod functions either. The only thing is that it's a little over an inch long and it's a bit awkward in some speaker docks.

Will a Logitech MM50 be unable to charge a 2nd gen touch?

The iHome IM9 does work. I have 3 Altec Lansing speaker systems (iM7, iM600, and another) that do not. But I've seen stickers on the new iM600's saying that they are compatible now. And then again, with an adaptor, everything works.
