This Christmas I'm either getting a Touch or an iPhone. I have a Blackberry Curve that I am perfectly happy with as a phone, so I'm thinking I'll just get a Touch to replace my iPod 5g video. My friend can't believe I wouldn't go ahead and get the iPhone for the same price.

I use my iPod 5g all the time in my car to listen to music and podcasts, to watch movies when I'm on trips.

So can you guys give me some good reasons why I should just get the Touch instead of the iPhone? That's what I'm leaning towards but I want someone to back me up.

I got the Touch because I'm perfectly happy with my phone and my wireless service. I didn't want the phone to be part of my iPod. Think of whether you want to be able to switch between music and phone in one gadget, do you want one gadget or do you not mind having two, do you want to change your wireless service (if you're not on AT&T). Those are the things I considered. My decision was that I wanted different gadgets, at least for now. I have the 16GB 1st gen Touch, and I love it. :-)

Research each device and weigh the pros and cons. We shouldn't have to talk you into buying any device. The iPod touch is pretty much an iPhone without the phone option. The phone option can actually come in handy as that allows you to surf the internet anywhere you are while the iPod touch can surf the internet only around wi-fi access points. The iPod touch comes with a capacity of up to 32GB while the iPhone is limited to 16GB.

So do the research and decide for yourself. That way you can blame yourself if you don't like the product you went with or you can praise yourself if you like the product you went with.

If you're happy with your phone, why change? (Especially if you're happy with your carrier.) In fact, I'll ask, "Why a Touch?" None of the uses you mentioned -- playing toonz in the car, watching a viddie -- are particular strong points of a Touch compared to a Classic. (The Classic would give you more storage, more/cheaper range of accessories, less cost.)

Do you have any pressing need for apps or connectivity that the Blackberry can't provide?

I put my Sony Ericcson W810 in my jeans pocket.. the iPhone is WAY too big to even consider this. The iPhone also seems fragile to me to be used as a phone.

I love my touch so much I don't even have songs on it haha. I just use it for apps!

Thanks for the input so far - it's been helpful!

I'm pretty sure I am leaning towards the Touch but I was wanting to hear from other Touch owners to see if they had buyers remorse after their purchase and ended up wishing they had gotten an iPhone instead.

Like a few of you mentioned, I think I like the idea of keeping my phone device and my music device separate. I nearly always play music from my iPod in my car, often at the same time I'm on the phone, so I'm thinking it would be annoying to have to unhook my music from the RCA jack every time I answered the phone.

I'd love to hear from other Touch owners.

(BTW - not looking for someone to blame my decision on. I've already done all of the tech research; now I'm looking to hear from actual owners and find out if they're happy with their choice.)

WhOa WhOa... You'd sacrifice the functionality and freedom of a FULL touch screen and go back to a 2in screen and a click wheel? wow...

Just need info when driving ;-) For me, any iPod screen is too small to actually watch a movie; maybe the OP was happy with the 5G screen.

I'm not much help. But, I did go the Apple store today. Nice being able to play with both the nano and the Touch. Of course, I'm more confused than ever now! Lol!

That nano is just so cool! And, the $150 gift card would cover it. But, the Touch is sweet! I'm on the fence. :)

I just like the idea of having a dedicated media player, and a dedicated smartphone (I have a Blackberry 8130 and a 1G touch). It's convenient to have an all in one device, but when it has to do so many things like playing videos, be a PDA, email/IM, and most importantly phone calls, it's battery life goes down the drain (and we all know about the non-changeable battery in the iPhone). I also like a physical keyboard more than a virtual one.

Don't feel bad GKH, I'm in the same boat. It will be 3 trips tomorrow (going after work, ;)) in roughly 2 weeks that I will have been to my local Apple Store to fiddle around with the nano and touch.

Between features, memory, size and price, its either the nano or touch. Price and memory isn't helping making the decision easier. :/

If the battery was better, I would go iPhone for sure. But I plan on buying a Blackberry Curve from Sprint sometime in January

Sacrifice and functionality says you, a compromise on storage and battery playback time says I.

Some people would rather carry around their entire library and have the ability to watch movies for 8 hours (even on a smaller screen) instead of being able to access the internet via wi-fi. Other people already have wi-fi devices such as PDAs or PSPs and see no need for an iPod touch that can hold "only" 32GB of data when they can spend much less and get a player that can house 120GB of data.

Haha, what a coincidence. I have a Blackberry Curve (which I am satisfied about the phone and text features), and a 5g iPod, and was thinking to replace the iPod with a Touch.

I think it really depends on what you want. For example, if you want to put more vids and music on your 5g, go with an iPod Classic.

Since my 5g storage was enough, I'm going with the iPod Touch since I really like the apps, the wide touch screen, and since I didn't like the price of the Blackberry data services, or the way the browser worked, I'm interested on using the iPod Touch's browser. I was thinking about getting the iPhone, but I like the idea of having a dedicated phone, and a media player.

So, it all really boils down to what you prefer. We can't really "talk" you into buying the Touch. Haha

iTouch/iPhone auto connection seems more limited than a classic. So if in-auto usage is of great import, I wouldn't be so much in haste to switch.

Can you explain that a little more? I've read that a few places but I don't understand what specifically people are referring to.

Is is hard to change songs on a Touch while you're driving?
