I have an iPhone 3G, and a non official universal dock
I just bought the dock so that I could have my iPhone upright on my desk and be able to use it easier.
But the problem I have found is the iPhone speaker is muted when its plugged into the dock, so I dont get sound alerts for new emails or messages.
Is there any way of forcing the iphone speaker to remain on?
--
The dock has an audio out, but if i plug it into any speakers I get a huge amount of audio interference noise.
oh and my iphone is not jailbroken
Thanks

Have you tried to turn your iPhone "Airplane Mode" to "On". That should make sure you don't get the interference on your speakers from the phone communicating with the cell towers. The downside is that this prevents calls from coming in, and probably disables email pushes too. Otherwise buy shielded speakers, but they will be more expensive.
Hope that helps.

I'll look up shielded speakers.
Any idea about forcing the iphone speaker to stay on?
There is no setting to force the speaker to stay on; if it is docked, it will play audio through the dock only (except for phone calls). I don't think shielded speakers really help with the audio interference you're probably referring to. If it's using the edge network, then you may hear interference. If you hook the speakers up to the headphone jack instead, you probably won't get much interference. If you use Airplane Mode, you shouldn't get any interference. Lastly, if you use the official iPhone dock, most any speakers should work without interference.

Um, the interference has to do with GSM if I remember, happens on T-Mobile and AT&T phones, while CDMA does not have this problem (that I know of).
Anytime I took a GSM phone and left it within 3 feet of any speaker, such as near my computer speakers, I'd get that interference. Never once happened on a CDMA phone.
The iPhone shielding SHOULD stop the noise you're refering too.
I found it so horrid to put the iPhone into airplane mode, considering I use it as a phone first, and entertainment second.

the iphone causes audio interference out of the dock as well
to my 5.1 speakers and my hdmi monitor with an internal speaker.
would buying an official dock shield them more?

The dock was never the issue of the noise, it's the iPhone and the GSM network.
If your iPhone is near any speaker it'll make the noise, and buying an offical dock won't help.
My curiosity comes up if a dock 15 feet away can transfer the GSM noise through audio cables, although I highly doubt it.
The iPhone shielded speakers only shield the speaker unit itself, I'm pretty sure they don't even make iPhone shielded dock units, unless my above question is true.

The interference can be picked up near the speakers or anywhere along the path from the speakers to the dock connector. This makes a big difference where the official iPhone dock can help. This is why people get the nag message about airplane mode when connecting to peripherals not made for the iPhone, because they're not shielded. Of course, NO official iPhone accessory will help if you got the iPhone close to a speaker. But in my car, for example, using the official dock has eliminated interference, though I never used to get it often anyway because I'm usually in the 3G network, where the frequency is different and you don't get the interference anyway.

What are you looking to do?
If it's docking for charging and syncing near a computer, and you use your monitor speakers, I'm not sure on your options.
If you're using external speakers, you can mute your monitor's and buy a pair of GSM shielded speakers.
Or you can do what I do, have a shielded speaker dock which charges my iPhone and makes for a decent speaker system for listening to music. When I do need to sync I just turn my speakers off for the time being.

Thanks, does that device come up with "this accessory is not designed to work with the iphone" message everytime you plug it in?
