View Full Version : 2.2 firmware oddities & annoyances I've noticed

Well, the new firmware is "cool" and all, but I miss the way the phone used to work. For example, Wi-Fi signal is often randomly dropped, especially after going from a locked state to the home screen when Wi-Fi is activated. Also, when using apps with 3G and Wi-Fi enabled at the same time, the iphone now seems to have trouble with connecting to any sort of connection type, whereas it used to use wifi as a preference. This has become really annoying.
Also, I don't know if I'm alone here, but often times when pressing the home button while locked (to check the time for example), the entire status bar at the top is blanked out. See the picture below to see that I'm talking about. This too, is annoying when I want to check the time or see what kind of cellular signal I'm getting. Anyone else experiencing this?
I've been exchanging emails with an Apple representative who made initial contact with me after I posted on the Apple boards about my wifi problems. This representative proposed I send in my iphone in its current state (no restore or changes), so they could send me a new unit and perform tests on my iphone. Weird no?

I haven't experienced any of these problems on my phone nor my wife's, and we're both on 2.2.

Hmm, well thanks. I'm doing a restore right now.

I would've taken the deal. You post on some forum about minor problems and get offered to get a new iPhone for it? Sounds good to me.

Why is this annoying when you want to check the time? It's right there in big white numbers.
Hope the restore fixes your problems. I won't be upgrading to 2.2 until an unlock is released for it, and that looks unlikely for a long while. Or if by any chance I meet someone with a Mac... then I can download PwnageTool and upgrade to 2.2 (can't explain right now as to why I can upgrade with PwnageTool and not iTunes, takes a long time as it's very detailed.)

Ya you're right the time is there. What I meant was the signal indicator, wifi status, and battery level. I have since done a restore and that seems to have fixed the problem, although I am still getting wifi dropped continuously.
Truth be told, I could have sent my iphone in and gotten an new one months ago, as part of the plastic body is cracked with the ubiquitus hairline cracks many white iphones are prone to. I just have been waiting until the last possible moment, in case something else happens in the mean time. To be honest it would be of great disruption to have to send in my phone and wait for a new one.
I'm not really one of those people that tries to rip Apple at every turn just because I can.

I'm sorry you're having to go through all those. I've been using 2.2 for a while and haven't had any of the problems you described above, either.
Yeah, I haven't gotten any of those problems since the 2.2 update, either.

I did a restore and it seems to have all went away. Although stocks and the weather app are still missing from my phone....weird.

Someone on this forum had the same problem not too long ago. He had jailbroken his phone and this happen, did you jailbreak your iPhone 3G? Either way, the guy fixed it by resetting all settings.

I can also say I've not had any problems with v2.2 on my iPhone. Having two of your apps disappear is really weird.

yes my phone was jailbroken at one point, and I even used an app that hides applications you don't want to see. So, it seems to me that this carried over through updates and even restores somehow. Its no longer jailbroken but it has persisted. Oh well, I never used either of them anyways.
