I have the 16gb iphone, and had about 9gigs of music on it. I hooked it up to my computer today to sync with itunes and walked away. When I came back, I saw a message that 9.2 gigs of space were required to perform the requested operation but only 2 gigs are available. The bar at the bottom of itunes showing the space taken on the iphone shows nothing for music, a little for photos, videos, and apps, and then 11 gigs of "other". And now all the music has been erased off the iphone. I tried restarting the iphone but it still is like that. Any thoughts on what has gone wrong and how to fix it?

I think iTunes recognizes your music as "other". Can you still access the music from the iPhone?
At any rate, seems like a glitch, and a lot of similar problems have surfaced. Next time check the board first. But anyway, restoring should do the trick.

A restore returns your iPhone to the state it was in when you bought it. Software-wise anyway. So yes it will. But you get to free up 11 gigs of unused space right? Note that this will upgrade you to 2.2 if you haven't already upgraded.
But hey, don't take my word for it, look at the other thread (really recommend this) and Google search a bit. Should work well enough.
