View Full Version : Sony car deck won't charge Touch

Hey guys...

I finally went out today and bought myself a new iPod Touch (the 8 GB model). I have a Sony CDXGT62IPW deck in my car -- it has the cable to charge the iPod and play it's music through the car speakers. It worked fine with my old iPod (1 GB nano).

Any thoughts? If I can't charge the iPod with the Sony radio I'll probably end up returning the Touch and going back to my old one. :(

Thanks

The 2nd generation Touch, 3G iPhone, and 4th generation Nano are all charged by the 5V (USB) pin on the dock connector -- they no longer use the 12V (firewire) pin. It sounds like your deck is using the 12V pin. Before you go off in a rant, this change was announced long ago by Apple, but many manufacturers did not change. Before taking it back, I think there are 3rd party adapters available that regulate the 12V down to 5V if you want to use your new Touch.

Thanks for the info. No rant -- I can't return the Touch, I love it!

Any idea where to find such an adapter?

Thanks.

Not to hijack this thread, but if they changed the pin that charges through the dock connector, is a whole new dock required? Or does it use the same connector but different pins and all I would need is a different cable?

Any idea where to find such an adapter? No, but poke around the iPhone forum to see if you can find any mention of it, or wait for someone to chime in on this thread.

Or does it use the same connector but different pins and all I would need is a different cable? The dock connector has not changed, both the 5V and 12V pins were always there. Internally the new iPods now only use the 5V line.

Do you think my 4G iPod Photo Monster iCar Charger will charge my new iPod Touch or will a new cable be required for the 5V line?

The Scosche passPORT (http://store.apple.com/ca/product/TS696LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA4NA&mco=MjIwMTg2NQ) is what I use for my 4G nano. There are some reports it does not work with some stereos so pick it up from a store with a good return policy.

Have u asked Sony if they have a cable specifically for the Touch?

It's a conspiracy I tell ya, every time they make u buy ANOTHER expensive cable when the old one sufficed. :o

The Scosche passPORT is what I use for my 4G nano. There are some reports it does not work with some stereos so pick it up from a store with a good return policy.

I saw one "review" on that site that said it worked with his Alpine with KCA-420i setup, which is identical with what I have. I'll have to go get this so I can charge my 32-gig 2nd Gen iPod Touch in my vehicle as well (of course, my trusty ol' 160 gig iPod Classic works perfectly with that Alpine hookup - go figure).

Seems that it does not work with Pioneer stereos. Don't know about the Sony as the original poster was complaining about, though. At least if you get this through the Apple store, they are pretty good at taking returns in case it does not work with your particular setup. At least it is nice to see that it will work with my particular setup as already reported.

Thanks for your help, guys.

I bought a Passport from eBay... we'll see how it goes! I've read reviews with people that have the same Sony deck as me and are able to charge their iPod Touches/iPhones with the Passport, so it should work fine.

Upgradeing from my 80BB Classic to a 32 Touch tomarrow. Hope my Kenwood will charge it!

I'm sort of in the same boat too. I got a 32GB touch for Christmas and it doesn't charge on my Blaupunkt London MP37 car stereo. Weird thing is that the documentation says that it will play but not charge, but it also doesn't play through the docking cable on the stereo. I've got an older iHome clock radio and the touch plays on it, but won't charge (though I do understand why).

I had been using my 60GB 5G iPod up to then with the docking cable in my car. I was originally thinking about selling the 5G, but since Blaupunkt hasn't put out a new cable I think I might keep the 5G around for travel. It holds a lot more music and the other nice thing about having the 5G in the car is that the click wheel is easier to use when driving since you've got one hand a bit occupied.
