View Full Version : Hiking trail maps on iPhone?

Is there anyway to get hiking trail maps onto the iphone. Ideally I would like something that looked like the google maps app with a blue dot to show your location but also hiking trails on the map just like roads are.
With google maps all I see is a blue dot in a blank area, not as helpful as I would like.
If there are any apps that allow you to add trails to google maps or some other service I would be happy to leave the app running while i hike and tag the name of the trail somehow.

Okay I don't know if this works 100% of the time but it worked for me on a weekend camping trip in the middle of no where.
If you use the Google Earth application and zoom in to exactly where you want to start, then slowly start moving towards the end (making sure it loads in as much clarity as it can) it should retain that data for some amount of time. It takes awhile to zoom back, but that's how I got to my camping spot without any signal what so ever.
On the other hand I'm pretty sure I've browsed some applications that were made for hiking & tagging pictures (which you could use for tagging trails) but I haven't downloaded any so maybe someone else can help.
I'm assuming when you say that Google maps only has a blue dot in a blank area, you're going to be hiking in a dead zone.

In the country, don't u need real GPS? 'coz tower-assisted mapping requires many towers for accuracy. Then at some point u want altitude?

The iPhone 3G has real GPS, you only need the cell towers for map data. On many of my hikes I have a cell phone signal most of the time anyway, last week I had a signal while I was at the top of Mount Monadnock. If the map has altitude the iPhone can figure your altitude from your location.
I downloaded an app called accuterra but it is not very useful, it stores maps on the iPhone - so it works when you don't have a cell signal but it takes up a ton of space. The maps are not detailed enough to show hiking trails, it does show your altitude based on your location though.

Wow, this looks awesome. I am leaving on a hiking trip tomorrow. I wish I had some time to play with it before I left but I definitely am going to try to use it on my trip.
I am now downloading maps and attempting to convert them to jpg for my trip. (Most seem to be in PDF format) I will leave a review here for this app after I have a chance to play with it.

Mapper is an awesome app, you need a little preparation before your trip (getting the map you want to use on your phone), and a little time to set three known locations but after that it worked great. It can use a photo of a map but the resolution was not very good when I tried it (to be fair lighting was horrible and I did not experiment much with the pictures of my map). I plan on posting a more detailed review with screenshots when I have time but I just wanted to say this is a great app right away.

if you search in the iTunes store you can find many apps for this.

I am very happy with mapper but I have done quite a bit of searching and had no luck finding a GPS app that showed your location on hiking trails. I thought Accuterra would do this but I was wrong. Could you name a few that will?
This doesn't help me much (Accuterra)--
