Altimeter vs. Latitude and Longitude

I have a 2G, so I realize there is no GPS capability; however, I have downloaded a couple GPS programs (Simple GPS and Basic GPS) that seem to do a reasonable job of giving me latitude and longitude but won't give me anything for altitude, which is what I am really interested in having. Any ideas why? Any ideas on how to get the altitude setting? Again, I realize I'm working without a GPS so it will not be terribly accurate. Thanks.

Because of the high altitude of GPS satellites, it enables the 3rd dimension measurement. Cell towers, in comparison are basically at ground level?
