Depends on a couple things, like are you just getting the plan for yourself, how many minutes, and text.
The iPhone itself, for an 8gb model, is $199.
A 450 minute plan is $69.99 (this includes your data plan)
200 text is $5
a 1 time activation fee is $36 if I remember
So your first bill will probably be over $300, plus whatever tax you have

Hmmm... my sister recently bought me an iPhone 3G 16GB (it's cheaper in the States so she's getting it with her here). She paid $420 at the store.
$300 for the actual iPhone
$100 rebate, you'll get that back when your contract ends
Which leaves $20 that I'm assuming was tax.
Then she told me she was gonna have to pay $135 first month though - $36 activation, $70 for the service, plus tax. But I'm going to check on that because $30 tax on a $100 bill? Seems weird...
You'll need to have your credit card, social security #, cash (obviously, or some form of payment if you prefer by credit card), and some government photo ID.

Nope. $70 is for 450 minutes and 5000 night and weekend minutes, and unlimited data. There are other more expensive plans. Texts are seperate - $5 for 200, $15 for 1500, and $20 for unlimited messages.
Not sure where you got your $40 from...

I live in North Carolina and just recently switched from US Cellular to At&t. My first bill was $116 ( just paid it 2 days ago). That was the activation fee, prorated month and a full month. I think my bill each month if I don't go over now should be around $75, I'm hoping. What I have is 450 anytime rollover mins/5000 night & weekend mins/unlimited mobile to mobile $39.99, unlimited data plan $30.00, 200 text messages $5, 15% off each bill for state discount (there are TONS of discounts just ask you may be eligible). I think the first month I only used 230 of my anytime mins meaning I will have some rolling over into my rollover bucket. I was paying about $70 a month with US Cellular and only getting mins to talk with which I hardly used any at all, now I can do anything I need to with the iphone and pay about the same amount each month. I have been VERY pleased with my iphone purchase and At&t's service, I personally have not dropped any calls but then again I do not talk that much. I ended up buying the 16gb black iphone because for $100 more I could double my memory even if I don't ever use it it is still there if I need it. As far as the accessories be prepared to spend some cash and shop around, watch some reviews on youtube that has helped me out A LOT (I prefer itsmemorphious) he does a great job and is very easy to follow. Currently I am sporting the INCIPIO feather olive green but got a black one on the way and power support anti glare for the screen. I think you will notice that you want to keep the look of the phone and not cover it up with some bulky case that is way to big to put in your pocket. I know this is prob more info than you asked for but it is always good to hear what others have to say about their iphone thoughts. Good luck and ENJOY !!!!!!!!! ;)
