View Full Version : Getting a line out from the ipod in the car?

Is the Belkin in car thing the only thing available at the moment to get a line out out of the ipod? I don't want to be connecting my car stereo to the headphone socket and would rather use a proper line out to connect to the stereo's aux inputs.
Thanks.

The Sik Imp does, and I believe so does the monster ipod cable.

Thanks. Do both that one and the monster one regulate battery charging? Does it know when to charge and when not to or does it just keep charging until full whenever connected (which presumably shortens battery life).
Thanks!

I have tried the imp...it arrived last friday. When I plug in the charger, I get tremendous feedback noise through my stereo (Monsoon / 2003 VW Passat). I have not been happy with its performance and so far, SIK has been unresponsive to my email requests for an RMA to return the product...we'll see.

The Monster charger w/ line out works very well IMO. No feedback and MUCH better than FM modulation.

Thanks. I think I'll go with the Monster one if I can get it on the UK, otherwise I'm stuck with a belkin one.

You will struggle to get one in the UK, Monster told me they wont be in the country for a couple of months. I bought a Sik Imp but haven't tried it in the car yet.

click the buy now button on the monster website, shows you dealers who stock it, then work thru them and see if they will ship to you.

Hmmm, Amazon won't. I'm suprised by that.
I'll email a couple. Thanks for pointing that out.
My ipod came today....!

I've tried a couple more but they don't either.
So do the Monster, SiK and Belkin ones all give a line out, or do any just duplicate the amplified headphone amp?
Looks like it will be the Sik, as they seem to ship to anywhere!
Thanks.

I made my own out of the Belkin product:

When you say made you own....wat was wrong with the Belkin one that you felt the need to cut it up?! :D

It doesn't provide a true line-out (it goes through that little 'amp') and I don't like the two-wire approach of the sik imp, so I made my own. Looks cleaner than the two wire imp. I'll post pics of my full install sometime this weekend.

Ah ok. But the Imp does provide a true line out (if I can deal wth the extra wire and stuff)? So the Belkin is just a like the headphone amp then?

I took bcruze's idea a step further, and instead of wiring a jack to the line out of the Belkin, I wired the cassette adapter directly to it: http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23478

That's cool, but it limits your options if you wanted to hook it up to anything else in the future.

That will be its sole purpose for quie some time. In the event I change vehicles, which I don't foresee any time soon, I'll create a new application using new product or the existing product there.

Without meaning to sound rude, that doesn't look particularly neat with the wiring hanging down in front of the console. I'm looking more to connect to my stereo's aux at the rear and have the wires tucked down the back of the dashboard console and connect underneath at the front.
So does the Sik Imp give a true line out?
I have a VW Beetle, which has cup holders in front of the gear box, and a ### lighter hidden under the dash front. I've just bought a Belkin Tunedok for the iPod to sit in, and will then connect that way.

Yes, the sik imp does true line out.

Thanks. I think because both the cup holder and the ### charger are so close to the dash the two wires and length of them shouldn't be too much of a problem as long as i can find something to tie the spare cabling to.
