Weird problem with disappearing music

My son's iPod Touch had about 4GB of music on it. I decided to put a couple of mp4 films on it for him, about 300MB each. I synced them fine, but when i look on his iPod the film are there (and play fine), but all his music has disappeared.

If I plug the iPod back in to the PC, iTunes tells me that I have 600MB of video and 4.5GB of "Other", with 0 Audio!!

Any ideas what's happened?

The "index" file that serves as the iPod's database has suffered a problem. The files are all still there, but the iPod no longers knows what/where they are. Try Resetting the Touch; if that doesn't help, you can attempt to rebuild the index file with something like CopyTrans Doctor (there's a couple other apps that do similar stuff). Or, if all the iPod's content still exist in iTunes, just Restore the Touch and then resync.
