Equipment:
iPod Touch 2G (32GB)
PC / XP Pro / 4GB / 2.5 TB
I'm not sure if this is a Touch issue or an iTunes (8.01.11) issue, but I might have a serious problem and I'm hoping I'm not alone.
I've been in the middle of rating and/or listening to tunes on the PC side and I have noticed while I am listening to a song and doing stuff with other songs (rating, cleaning up the ID tags, etc.) changes its title. Usually it's not the song playing but one immediately before/after it. But it's definitely a problem as what happens is a song, once it's renamed, appears to be a duplicate in its folder but it's really another track, in which case iTunes can't find it and I need to be a detective to figure out what the hell is happening.
This happened last night with a Scissor Sisters tune. I was going through albums to make a mix and I noticed a few tunes I wanted to rate, so as I'm listening to track 2, I rated track 3 and suddenly the song I was listening to is renamed to the track I was rating, leaving me with -- in theory -- two track 3's and no track 2.
It's sort of spontaneous but always irritating at the very least.
Then I went into my music folder, which is located on an external drive, and saw 50+ megs of duplicate tunes (eg 01 Sample Song 1.mp3). I deleted all the dupes (and a couple of legit songs, unfortunately) and I think the problem -- temporarily -- is cured. But this is something I'm worrying about and wondering if it has to do with iTunes, XP, or a problem brewing with the external drive on which I've got my music (or...a problem with my USB bus, or my drive controller, etc. etc. etc.).
Any help would be appreciated...thanks in advance, and I apologize for the length of this post...
