so is there a final consensus on how to charge your iphone to get the best and longest battery life to it? Should I follow Apple's directions and just charge it regularly but let it go through a full charge cycle at least once a month? Sometimes I hardly use my phone the whole day and I still charge it before I sleep even though it shows full battery life. I've heard that this is kind of damaging to the battery is that right?

There is no definitive answer in this. With todays batteries it's not suppose to matter but to make me feel better i always let it go completely dead at least once every 10 cycles or so(which is about once every couple weeks) I would listen to apple, after all they want you to be completely happy right?

Apple recommends charging it fully once a month?! I charge mine fully every single day. Wtf?!

no they recommend you to go through one charge cycle at least once a month. One cycle meaning you charge it full then use it all the way till the battery is empty

To be more precise, Apple recommends that you go through a complete charge cycle only if you don't use the battery often. Here is a thorough explanation.

frequent and shallow charges are the best way to increase the longevity of the iphone's Lithium Ion battery. This means charging to full capacity at any point in the day. But like Apple recommends, these types of batteries need to be fully discharged at least once a month. Beware though, sometimes after a full discharge and recharge the battery indicator can get stuck in the "fully charged" position until the next time you plug it in or turn it off.

I can concur, running the battery cycle once per month is the way to go. I handed off my original 8GB iPhone to my wife, and we both discharge/recharge fully on the same day each month.
I tend to keep my iPhone 3G battery as full as possible, and it's easy to do so with a charger in the car. My battery drains quite a bit at work, where I can barely get an EDGE signal. I still turn off Location Services, 3G, wifi, etc....but the battery still gets down to half/less than half after a full day at work (searching for signal drains the battery).
Either way, I highly recommend the once-per-month discharge/recharge. It's early, but I haven't seen any issues with keeping a fully charged battery most days & draining it once per month.

this may sound ridiculous, but what is the best/fastest way to drain the battery? The lowest I usually get it to is about 20-30 percent batter life by the end of the day.

Not to sound flip but either use the phone alot (play games, make calls, whatever) or just let it drain on its own. I just did the recharge on mine and got it to say 10%. I think it was actually lower than that. When I put it on the charger it took a while to even get enough of a charge to start the phone up again.

As shown above, Apple says "these types of batteries need to be fully discharged at least once a month" only if the battery is not used often. It seems to indicate that you won't even have to do a full discharge/charge as long as you use your iPhone every day.

Open the camera and just let it sit being "ready" to capture an image. I accidentally did, and i decimated my battery. or play a long movie on it.

Do other smartphones work much better in this regard?
