I ordered my "ultra-compact USB adapter" off the website and it arrived today.
Question I pose to the forum is - are you going to bother to return your old one?
The enclosed letter does say "If you do not arrange collection of the return envelope/box within 10 business days ... Apple will have the right to charge your credict card a non-return fee in the amount described at the time of order confirmation, as you agreed when you requested a repair from AppleCare Service."
. . . now given that I didn't agree to any non-return fee and they don't have my credit card number, what could they do?
I imagine the text is there just so they can cover their own asses in case anything bad does happen with my old adapter, but it works well and I'd like to keep it.

well, I got mine like two weeks ago and I haven't seen any charges.. They do ask for your phone serial number so I suppose they can look up any of the info they want.

You agreed to it when you filled out the form for the recall. It was part of the terms.
If you have an iTunes account they have your credit card number.
Why not return it? It's not that big a deal. Besides, if the old one fails, your house could burn down.

Some people think having two will always be better than having one, even when one of them can "burn your house down."
I received mine a few days ago. Returned the old one the next day. It's just as simple as putting it in the box, taping it, and throwing it into one of the drop-off boxes.

Why would you want to keep it, when you know that there is a defect? I mean that’s why they are replacing them.
Its not like you have to pay for anything, they send you pre-paid labels to send it back.
It’s not a difficult thing to do.

It's nice to have an extra, especially since most of my old charging accessories don't work with my new iPhone
I feel pretty confident I can mange not to burn my house down and am willing to take responsibility for whatever happens.
I am still debating about sending my old one back, is Apple trying to charge people who don't send the old one back?

The reason they're being recalled is because the prongs on the adapter can break off in the power outlet leading to a risk of shock and fire. This is not something you can control.
Look at it from a risk/reward perspective. On the plus side you have a $29 iPhone adapter. On the minus side you have a risk of injury or death from electrical shock. Plus, the possibility of fire with the loss of life and property.
It hardly seems worth it. Just return the damn thing and buy another one if you need two.

it was my understanding that apple would use whatever credit card info they had on file to charge you. if you do not have an apple account or a card on file with itunes, they may have a harder time getting your money. the form that came with my new charger said i had a long time to get it back to them, i believe it was sometime in january when they would charge me for it. like daihard, i put mine right in the box and sent it out the next day.
i agree with the others, send it back. if you need additional chargers, there are plenty of SAFE ones out there to choose from (i am thinking of getting the griffin dual charger, pretty cool to charge two things with one plug). there are also more adaptors coming out to make many older accessories work, i'm off to the apple store to get one for my car adaptor....

Yes it's DHL. You can go to their website and find a drop off location, or you can put it in a drop box (Apple doesn't recommend this), or you can arrange for a pickup.

If these pictures don't convince you to return your adapter, then nothing will.
