my first ipod was a 10g 3g. it was the HP ipod and it came in a package with a car charger and the cylindrical itrip

i absolutely loved that itrip because i was able to take it to the bar i work at, and run it through the stereo there, with great sound aand t lengths of 20-25 ft away from the reciever. in fact most of the time, i just kept it in my pocket as i circulated and most people thought it was a remote control as i changed from one song to the next.
besides the fact that i was able to go that far away from the receiver with my ipod and itrip as one with no interference, my favorite feature was that i was able to adjust the volume of the song through the speakers by adjusting the volume level on my ipod unit by using the scrolling touch wheel (a major feature during shuffle play as my songs shuffle from very low volume to very high volume depending on how they were dl'ed to my ipod)
when my 3g crapped out on me, i got a 160g classic thinking more music, better selection for the people at the bar, and for when we run it through the portable stereo we take to football tailgates.
i then realized i needed a new itrip which was the one which now affixes itself to the bottom of the ipod.

after minutes of its initial use (simply trying it out on my stereo at home) i recognized it was no where close to as mobile as the previous one. i could move it maybe a foot away from the receiver without compromising sound, but while i moved it, it sounded like i was swiching radio stations (that garbled). not only that, but i realized that i wasnt able to increase or decrease the volume through the stereo by increasing or decreasing the volume on the ipod using the touch wheel. it played at whatever volume the stereo was at (even if the ipod units volume was at 0). in addition, in order to get any kind of half decent volume, i would have to max out the volume on whichever stereo i was using! up to max, or 50 or whatever. that rendered smaller portable stereos practically useless for this.
my questions for you and requests for suggestions are:
has anyone else found this to be a major disapointment like me?
did i just get a bad itrip that im not able to travel that far away from the receiever without distortion?
did griffin disable the volume control from the ipod for the subsequent generations of its itrip family?
are there any other solutions to my problem?
i want to go back to being able to keep the ipod in my pocket, circulate the room with no sound distortion, AND have no volume problems. or be able to do the same at the football tailgates and have substantial volume out of a small portable stereo.
any help?

suggestions?
